Monochrome style interior design Bedrooms Inspiration

When it comes to design there are no better combination than the stark contrast of black and white colours and it’s the reason many fashion and interior designers alike use a monochrome palette as their fall-back option. It’s difficult to get wrong but even more difficult to get perfect as this versatile combination can work or clash with other colours to give your room a bright, mute or neutral feel. It’s essential to decide beforehand whether to go with full white with black as an accent or the other way round if you prefer a more sophisticated and dark look to your home or bedroom. The colour black will make space seems darker and smaller than it actually is so it’s not something that is recommended for smaller bedrooms. To play off the dark atmosphere an accent white wall can be created as it breaks the monotonous nature of using only one colour.

You should always play on the contrast of the colours, for example a white floor would be perfect for a black rug or a black picture frame with a white painting inside it. The same rule applies to black furniture against interior or wooden flooring, although the textures of those items are likely to detract from the simplicity of black & white colours. Wooden elements such as a rough headboard or a stool next to the bed can also be painted or waxed; this will add warmth to the room and break up the ubiquity. Wood is also like fine wine, in a sense that it improves with age and things like vintage furniture will have a transforming effect on the look and feel of your room.

Lighting is a key ingredient to our monochrome recipe and natural light is your friend here as it will make a white room brighter yet also give attention to the darker colour schemes. Directional light from table lamps will be the perfect natural light substitute at night as you want something that won’t be much of an eye strain as this can disrupt your natural sleep patterns. If you’re a person who simply cannot sleep when sun is streaming through the window, black curtains are certainly the best option. They’re much more suited to keeping out light and can be easily folded away to not overbear the black and white bedroom contrast. Monochrome bedrooms aren’t for everyone but the beauty of interior design is there are no right or wrong answers, if you feel that a spot of colour is necessary you should introduce it, throw some brightly coloured cushions around, put up a stack of magazines instead of a stool or even find some colourful throws for your bed, the possibilities are endless.
