Inition Future Technology Playground

A few weeks ago I was invited to Inition for a sneak peek into the future of the diverse world of technology. You may remember Inition from the Westfield VR experience I wrote about back in April but nothing could prepare me for the pure nerdy fun that was in store.

[separator type="thin"]

I was wowed by a selection of projects and brand experiences that Inition have had a hand in over the years. If you think that future technology is lightyears away you may be in for a surprise as companies such as Jaguar, Topshop and Selfridges have already dipped their toes in the water.

For Topshop Inition created a 360 degree virtual reality catwalk show that was used during London Fashion Week and gave the public a glimpse of the potential of the platform.

Having followed the progress of VR over the past couple of years the Oculus Rift demos were top of my geeky bucket list. Virtual reality is primarily based upon delivering a sense of presence of actually taking you to a different location. Because there is less interference to your auditory processing system than for example the cinema, more of your senses are in tune to whats going on.

At the expense of sounding like a teenager on his first trip to Amsterdam, it does raise some serious questions about the nature of 'real'. If in VR you're experiencing the same sensations you would in the 'real' world then eventually will we really be able to tell the difference?

[separator type="thin"]

On the other hand we also have augmented reality which places a virtual layer (perfect for 3D objects) into physical settings. If you watched E3 last week you may have heard how Microsoft blew everyone away with their augmented reality version of Minecraft that you can literally play on your coffee table.

microsoft-hololens-augmented-reality-ar

Inition have employed augmented reality technology on projects in different sectors such as sport, health, telecommunications and even architecture. It was fantastic to try out a virtual Jaguar showroom as you're quite clearly looking at nothing yet glance over your tablet and there's actually a full car in front of you. Amazing stuff. Priligy prices comparison and generic Priligy dapoxetine free samples available on http://howmed.net/priligy-dapoxetine/.

This technology also has the ability to change the way you shop from magazine and blur the line between physical and digital. As an example imagine you're flicking through GQ and you see an ad for the latest Armani watch. Instead of looking at images of models you'll be able to see what the watch looks like directly on your wrist, whether it suits your body type or the outfit you're wearing. Something that was impossible a few years ago will soon become commonplace.

AR/VR experiences are just some of the services Inition provide but they also have the capacity and individual knowledge within the business to create 3D printed objects and even smart screens which I will go into in my next post.

A NOTE ON VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality is coming and it's going to hit industries in a major way. It's very hard to imagine a post-VR future purely because we, as people, have trouble imagining next next month let alone next year.

Nobody could have predicted what the internet will achieve when it was initially used as purely a method of exchanging information. The same goes for VR and it's future is likely to be anything but quiet and stable.

Huge industries ranging from the medical sector to travel will be creating tools and experiences using virtual reality technologies within the next 2 years and it won't stop there. Entertainment and communication companies are exploring ways of taking the user to locations or events usually out of reach.

Unlimited virtual worlds, exclusive events, exotic overseas locations, Chelsea football games or Beyonce concerts - this will all be there to be experienced at the touch of a button.

Westfield Use Oculus Rift to Showcase Future VR Experiences

Last month Krissy D from Interlaced and I got a little glimpse into the future of retail fashion. London shopping mall chain Westfield teamed up with virtual reality interactive experience production company Inition to showcase the key fashion trends of spring/summer 2015 using virtual reality.

Although the concept has been around for decades virtual reality experiences are slowly fighting their ground and moving from a niche interest to the future of fashion, travel and more. Companies such as Oculus Rift (now owned by Facebook), Sony and HTC (in partnership with Steam) have made huge steps in the VR world and are now offering experiences that just a few years ago were the stuff of fantasy.

To think about virtual reality technology you need to look at the bigger picture. Sure, the tech will be used for gaming, including 360-degree gaming but it’s also a chance to transport yourself to literally any place in the world. Get a chance to watch gigs from the front row, the ability to look at the interior of cars at a showroom or simply visit your next holiday destination without ever leaving your bedroom.

The possibilities in this case are literally endless, who knew what the internet will be when it was in it’s infancy? It’s great that companies such as Westfield and Inition recognise the potential of VR and are starting to educate the public about it’s potential.

The actual installation consisted of three elements: interacting with giant video walls showcasing this season's major fashion trends; taking a trip into a colourful dreamscape using Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles; and using Edit Me, a giant touchscreen, to find outfits of any colour or style located in any of Westfield's many retailers.

Virtual Reality - The Experience

The Oculus Rift was of course the centre of my attention. We got to try out a three-minute-long 360-degree immersive interactive experience in three different worlds by putting on the virtual reality goggles. They contain a Leap Motion sensor strapped to the front that picked up our hands, which allowed us to turn and fly in the dreamscape world.

"There's a huge swell of interest in VR – there's probably about 20 VR headset manufacturers trying to bring products to market at this moment. Normally a web-based shopping experience is just a website but with VR, you can replicate the walking into a store experience as if you're standing in the store itself" - Stuart Cupit, the co-founder and director of Inition.

westfield vr virtual reality shopping oculus rift fashtechAlthough the virtual reality experience was limited it really gave me a glimpse into the future of fashion, catwalks and shopping. By fooling the senses a part of you actually believes you’re in a different world and with the ever faster changes in this technology I believe companies would be wise to act on its potential.

Extraordinary Experiences from Inition

Inition have worked on interactive experience installations for 15 years. They’ve worked with Nissan on producing a flying virtual reality experience and in 2014, it collaborated with Topshop to create a virtual reality fashion catwalk experience that allowed VR headset wearers to feel as if they were in the front row of the fashion show.

Future Tech Inspiration 01

It’s finally time to let my geeky side out and talk a little about the weird and wonderful world of technology. Technology is all around us and has been with us for thousands of years. A hammer is a technology in a way that it’s a tool that was created to make our lives easier. Please keep this in mind when thinking about how far tech has come in recent years (rather than decades) and just how future tech will enrich our lives in ways we cannot possibly conceive.

Technology is involved in every aspect of our lives and that includes fashion by enhancing our shopping experiences. Recent technological innovations are designed to blur the lines between brick and mortar stores and their digital counterparts. Nike, Burberry and Rebecca Minkoff are just some of the brands I can think of that have embraced the digital revolution and stayed ahead of the fashion technology pack.

Fashion Technology Inspiration

interlaced fashion technology

INTERLACED is a media and events company dedicated to inspire, educate, and communicate the developments around the next wave of fashion through events, news content and educational activities. You may have noticed the appearance of their logo in the sidebar over the last couple of week so this is their official introduction. Interlaced basic core aim is to help accelerate consumer adoption of wearable fashion, smart clothing and apparel as well as increase awareness of the fashtech industry.

Interlaced is built on the fact that in order to speed up innovation within fashion houses and technology companies in the area of wearable tech apparel, an increasing demand from the end-consumer needs to be apparent.

Interlaced aim to bring together four key audiences - Fashion Tech Pioneers, Corporations, Academia and End Consumers – and start a dialogue around the developments shaping the fashion tech industry. If you're at all interested in wearable tech, 3D printing, smart fabrics, eTextiles or smart accessories

2015 - Interlaced are currently planning their first event for September 2015. This one day event will include talks from industry leaders, spark debates around what’s next for the fashion tech industry and feature a very special fashion showcase. Google Technology Updates

Google has been at the forefront of modern technology and if you still think of them as a search engine then this section is for you. Google is now a word synonymous with things like machine learning, self driving cars, UX web design, fibreoptic broadband and that's just scratching the surface. I have spoken about Google and their image detection in the past and will continue to do so in the coming months but here are some of their recent projects that caught my eye:

So here's my first technology / futurology roundup. It's a little bit different from the usual fashion / lifestyle posts but for me it's all interconnected. I will be producing one of these roundups every month and also writing more detailed posts that concentrate on a single topic such as cryptocurrencies, machine learning or self driving cars.
