Mobile Banking – Displacing the Incumbents

When I was growing up a mobile phone was seen as a luxury. Something only businessmen owned to make important calls overseas. Over the years the line between a phone and a computer has become increasingly blurred as new and exciting features have become the norm. We now have more processing power and information in our pockets than the president of United States did 20 years ago. We have access to a vast library of human knowledge as well as billions of hours of entertainment in audio, visual or text form. There are people who decry technology as evil but technology is just a tool and like any tool it facilitates your actions (whether positive or negative) into the world. You don't have to look far to see traditional industries such as advertising, journalism and photography being disrupted by technology. And banking is next.

The strength of banks has always been trust but over the last few decades their carefully crafted facade has started to slip. These corporations have been caught laundering money for Mexican cartels, rigging Libor rates and playing a major role in the 2008 financial crisis. It's safe to say the public trust in these institutions is at an all time low. Do any of us really know how our money is used once it enters the chaotic financial system? If money is information then why do we pay exuberant fees and wait days to send it abroad when a WhatsApp message gets delivered instantly? Technological evolution forces companies to take on an 'adapt or die' mentality as costs fall due to increased competition and economies of scale. Over the last few years companies have sprung up around the world with the aim of displacing the incumbents and I wanted to highlight a few of them here.

[separator type="thin"]

The Contenders

Countries such as China have started to adopt a 'mobile first' approach to payments which allows its citizens to pay bills and order taxis all within one universal app. Authoritarian implications aside, the ease of use and mass adoption of this idea means Europe is not far behind. Here are 3 companies that I've used in the last few years that are poised to make an impact in the European banking scene.

User Experience + Design

[separator type="thin"]

My auntie is the least tech literate person I know so to make this a fair and unbiased test I decided to use her as my UX test subject. I asked her to give me a mark out of 10 for initial setup, ease of use (features such as topping up, sending payments and setting up a savings pot), overall look and feel and ability to get help within the app. I will also add points for any additional features these companies provide.

LOOT

Initial Setup: 9/10

Additional Features: 5/10

Overall: 36/50

Although the Loot app is the only one that provides a web alternative it also means logging in with a password every single time instead of a PIN. The 'Help' section was difficult to find as it only appears as a small icon on one of the categories. It also offers very few additional features compared to its competitors such as cryptocurrencies, overdrafts or the ability to have your salary paid in directly.

Overall: 41/50

Revolut is the card I tend to use the most during my travels. You can spend in over 150 currencies or exchange FIAT for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin/Ethereum at very competitive rates . You get a free Euro IBAN account for international payments, set budgets and monitor spending habits. The app is very easy to navigate and offers many additional features for a low monthly payment.

[column]

MONZO

Initial Setup: 8/10

Ease of Use: 8/10

Look & Feel: 8/10

Additional Features: 8/10

Overall: 41/50

Very similar to Revolut but aimed more towards the UK market. Monzo offers a full UK Current Account – you can receive salary, make direct debit payments, bank transfers or even open overdraft. Help was very easy to find and the design is geared towards great user experience. Thoughtful touches such as monthly spending reports help you keep your finances in check. The only downside I found is the 3% ATM withdrawal charge when you're abroad.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

Overall all 3 apps came out with a solid rating with Loot slightly behind due to its lack of features. Monzo is a perfect alternative to traditional UK Current Accounts while a wide range of currencies and competitive exchange rates means Revolut is the ideal companion when travelling abroad. Compared to the mess that banking apps such as Natwest or Nationwide provide, using Monzo and Revolut abroad was like a breath of fresh air. Spending breakdowns allow for tighter control of your finances and the ability to freeze your card or instantly pay contacts are features that are very handy in day to day life. (If you're interested follow this link to find out more).

The next step for mobile technology is giving everyone in the world the ability to manage their own money and freely exchange it for goods and services. The unbanked in developing countries in Africa, South America and Asia will leapfrog banks just as they leapfrogged landlines with mobile phones. Cryptocurrencies are a step in the right direction but there are still major hurdles to overcome before they're accepted as a stable form of money. For the time being all we can do is vote with our wallets and I commend companies such as Loot, Monzo and Revolut for embracing the inevitable change we're going to experience in our lifetime.

As a technologist, I see the trends, and I see that automation inevitably is going to mean fewer and fewer jobs. And if we do not find a way to provide a basic income for people who have no work, or no meaningful work, we’re going to have social unrest that could get people killed. When we have increasing production - year after year after year - some of that needs to be reinvested in society.

What The Hell Is Blockchain? // Journal 67

It's easy to get entrenched in old ideals and stick to the tried and tested but history has shown us time and time again that progress is inevitable. This couldn't be truer with regard to the tech sector as we're seeing huge leaps of innovation in areas ranging from transportation (semi-autonomous self driving cars) to speech generation (recent DeepMind breakthrough). As technology moves forward it's hard to predict what the future will hold five years from now, let alone ten but already we're seeing emerging trends that are sure to shake up the established order of things.

[separator type="thin"]

What is Fintech?

[separator type="thin"]

modern glass architecture canary wharf london

Fintech is the fusion of finance and technology and the driving force behind developments in areas such as the Blockchain, AI chatbots and personal banking. The majority of transactions we make everyday are minuscule so emergence of a secure and frictionless system unrestricted by borders or political regulations isn't hard to imagine. Most of the money in the world is digital so we can think of everything from stocks to assets as bits of information. This information 'lives' on the internet and can be easily traded or exchanged in the same way you trade money for a pint of beer at the pub.

The amount of information on the internet is going to grow exponentially over the coming years and access, appropriation or sale of this information is going to become crucial. If you're a content creator like myself it's important to get fair compensation for your work and its future use. By assigning a value to each bit of information we can shift into a completely new economy. This virtual goods and assets economy will be backed up by an encrypted database that's distributed around the world making it more secure than the systems in use today.

modern glass architecture canary wharf london

Cutting out the banking middleman will also put us on a path towards greater transparency. Open source cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are growing steady as the number of contributing developers increases. Companies such as Coinbase and Circle are interacting with the community in order to grow and improve their services. Banks on the other hand are being fined billions of dollars for laundering money for drug cartels. Go figure.

Banking is an entirely virtual business which makes it easy to avoid regulation and accountability. The reaction to the 2008 financial crisis has been more short term borrowing to fund long term goals and doing the same things while expecting a different outcome is the very definition of insanity. So what's the solution?

Say hello to the Blockchain. Blockchain is a way to rapidly exchange digital assets — such as payments, photos, contracts — between two or more parties in a secure, verifiable and auditable process that doesn’t require a middleman. Each party in the network has its own copy of the blockchain attached to every asset. As long as the chains are in sync, all parties can be confident that the asset or transaction is valid. (Source).

modern glass architecture canary wharf london

Each transaction behaves like a physical object and yet it's still digital. That's what so cool about it. Because transactional information itself doesn't take up a lot of data it's irrelevant whether you want to send 100,000 of something or .0000001 of it. The transaction can then be completed at the click of a button regardless of location.

This is how Bitcoin works and the public ledger for Bitcoin transactions lives on the Blockchain. As someone who knows the slow process of sending money abroad while paying exuberant fees this is a game changer. You can also 'tip' people or friends on Twitter, GitHub, Reddit and more using a service such as ChangeTip. Someone took a picture you like or made a comment that made you laugh? Send them your appreciation.

[separator type="thin"]

Displacing The Incumbent

[separator type="thin"]

This is not the first time such a huge monetary shift was on the horizon. Back in the day bartering was the only option to trade, which was replaced by precious metals (gold, silver), then coins printed on precious metals and finally a piece of paper that says you own a certain amount of precious metals. As mentioned above only 5% of money in the world is physical cash so a system that works globally for the other 95% is essential.

Everyday transactions are just a small piece of the cake though. Imagine you create YouTube videos for a living and YouTube pays you money by adding advertising to your content. A concept that circumvents this allows the user to pay proportionally for each 10 seconds of video they watch. The idea here is that the market decides how much something is worth.

garden canary wharfIf you have a Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet installed in a browser then newspapers and magazines have less of a need for paywalls. The writer will get rewarded proportionally to how good the article is. If someone reads the first paragraph and leaves they get charged £0.0005. £0.0015 if they read the whole thing.

But why would I pay for something that I already get for free? The point is not many things on the internet are 'free'. If you're using a service such as Facebook you're the product being sold. Your private messages, location data and even browsing habits are sold to advertisers for huge sums of money. By taking ownership of your own data you also take back some power. There's also nothing stopping advertisers PAYING YOU for select information you're willing to share. Google Opinion Rewards is a great example of this as it rewards you with credit that can be spent at the Play Store.

[separator type="thin"]

symmetry art of visuals

Wandering through this reflective jungle got me thinking about technology and how we've gone from a device that sent text messages around the world to something that has access to the wealth of human knowledge. The internet is an unlimited resource that can be used to better ourselves, build communities and exchange information. The only limit here our imagination.

modern glass architecture canary wharf london

With regard to fintech, the blockchain and beyond we're still in the very early stages. There's a huge gap between political and technical feasibility but as tech gets better and cheaper and our access and understanding of new information improves we're sure to enter new grounds. Regulation should become less and less complex, not more. So when a new technology such as this comes along will you sit up and take notice or call it a fad the way this scientist did in 1995.

Exploring the Intersection of Art and Machine Intelligence

I've always been fascinated by the concept of artificial intelligence and whether we will know when it has truly 'arrived'. The goalposts seem to move every time I dive into the topic as many machine learning algorithms display intelligent properties that could have passed a Turing Test several decades ago.

Many of us have chatbots on our phones that can deal with basic queries while apps such as Google Now provide us with information before we even need it. The potential for AI and automation to replace jobs is almost guaranteed as we're currently seeing with brands such as Adidas, McDonalds and Uber

Whether a machine can mimic creativity is a question that has been posed more frequently and the answer to that is yes. Google for example is teaching its artificial intelligence how to understand language by making it predict, and replicate, the works of famous dead authors. Companies such as Melomics are creating brand new music using an AI while teaching a neural network about famous painters such as Picasso or Pollock can lead to some amazing results as you can see below:

[separator type="thin"]

google neural network paintersWouldn’t it be great to hire Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Suzuki Harunobu, Camille Corot or Jackson Pollock as art consultants for your photography project? Or how about game design? By looking at patterns the neural network can identify elements at multiple levels (e.g. grain, texture, strokes, composition), then use an optimisation process to help generate a new image from scratch.

This leads us further into issues of copyright and ownership and whether those concepts are outdated in the modern digital world. If a machine can randomly produce a famous song or produce a song that then becomes well known around the world, who owns the copyright? As we're slowly entering the world of abundance it will be fascinating to see these battles play out against ingrained resistance

FashTech Summit, London 2016

Earlier this month I attended the FashTech Summit in London to represent UNSIGNED GRP and get the latest industry insights from marketers and brands who are shaping this exciting fashion technology landscape. When it was launched in 2014, FashTech was a simple meet up that focused on start-ups and panel discussions. Now, less than 2 years later and events across London, New York and San Francisco it really feels like FashTech has matured into a community hub for talent, research and bold new ideas.

The event took place in the heart of East London at Studio Spaces where the audience listened to presentations and panel discussions from the industry’s most disruptive and innovative thought leaders including Drew Elliot (the man behind Kim Kardashian’s attempt to #breaktheinternet) and Second Home co-founder Rohan Silva, who revealed the launch of a fashion hub in west London.

Over the course of the 2 days it became clear which trends are starting to dominate the industry. The influx of customer data now allows brands to use multiple touchpoints when analysing customer journeys and merging online and offline data together to create a more rounded shopping experience. The shift towards emotive content on blogs and social media has also not gone unnoticed with Kelly Kowal (MD Farfetch Black & White Division) saying "Wherever you discover you want to purchase. Publishers are slowly becoming retailers".

Virtual Reality

A big emphasis was placed on VR as a tool that will revolutionise retail. By placing the customer directly into an immersive experience it becomes easier for a brand to engage them and elicit a response such as a social share or an in-store purchase. Henry Stuart (Chief Executive of Visualise) said retailers can tap into VR to “create amazing experiences that push boundaries and create magical memories”. 3D scanning will enable customers to create virtual avatars of themselves which in turn can be used in virtual outlets. These outlets will allow customers to try on outfits with interchangeable backgrounds for richer shopping experiences.

Customer First Approach

The importance of placing the customer first has never been higher. Brands are really starting to think creatively about engaging their target audience. Philip Handford (Founder at Campaign Designs) highlighted the importance of creating a destination store in order to attract and engage consumers. Philip actually predicted that in the future “high streets will become a series of immersive billboards and brand lounges that will capture people’s imaginations”. Mobile phones already know intimate details of our lives (location, frequent contacts, browsing and chat history) so combining this with shopping preferences is likely to yield great results.

Fitness Wearables Comparison & Review

Wearable technology or wearables as they're commonly known are wearable fashion devices that have grown in prominence recently thanks to products such as the Apple iWatch as well as our own insatiable appetite for personal data. Wearable devices often incorporate practical functions and can connect to the Internet of Things which further extends their use in our everyday lives.

Over the last few weeks I've been testing out the Jawbone UP24 and Withings Activite fitness trackers as well as the LG Android Wear watch to see what they're like to live with every day.

Although it's not technically a fitness tracker the LG G Watch works perfectly with the Google Fit app and uses sensors to detect activities such as walking, running or cycling. You can set simple daily goals and get an alert when you've reached them.

From a fitness perspective the watch is a little underwhelming although it can serve as a hub for all your Android notifications and sync with your Google account so you'll never miss an email or a calendar event again.

Jawbone UP24

I've had my Jawbone around 11 months now and I feel the signs of wear and tear are really starting to show. The end cap has broken on me several times and the vibrate alert function is unresponsive even after several resets.

It's design is very minimal and doesn't feel noticeable on your wrist which made it a must have for a few of my early lookbook shoots. The battery also lasts around 10-14 days before a short 30 minute recharge is needed.

Withings Activité

The Withings Activite watch is the latest addition to the Style Division family and it's elegant design won me over from day 1. Bluetooth setup took around 5 minutes and as long as the watch is near your phone it will update your sleep and fitness data in the background.

A 6 months battery life is a bonus although you cannot replace it yourself which is a bit of a pain. The watch also comes in a wide variety of colours and interchangeable straps so you'll never be short of options.

The UP24 app is relatively easy to setup and it will be counting steps within minutes of you opening the box. The app allows you to set meal / sleep reminders which vibrate the tracker and jolt you into action. If your friends or family also have a Jawbone you can challenge them to duels as well as see historic data to see if you're getting better over time. Hours slept has to be added manually every morning which is my only complaint.

Android Wear uses Google's material design principles which separates important bits of information into 'cards' for you to read and dismiss at your own convenience.

The different swipes may take some getting used to but after the homepage is setup to your liking it's much more convenient than taking a mobile out of your pocket.

Withings Activité

Withings Health Mate is an app that links all your Withings products together and I've found it a joy to use. The user experience is seamless and the app updates itself in the background while you work. The addition of achievements gamifies the fitness experience and subtly encourages you to beat your best 'score'. You can also find additional information by logging into your profile online and playing around with all your data.

The Verdict

[separator type="thin"]

Overall I feel that the Withings Activite Steel is the best of the three as it ticks all the right boxes in terms of design, functionality and price. An important aspect for me was the ability to swim with my fitness tracker which the other two do not provide although wearing the same watch day in, day out can get monotonous. The Jawbone UP24 is a great alternative although it does seem to be poorly made so you may see yourself replacing it every year. The LG Android Wear smartwatch has the best functionality although it needs to be charged nearly every night and looks very chunky on your wrist so for the best of both worlds I recommend the Withings Activite Steel.

3 Fashtech Surprises from the CES Technology Tradeshow

Over the past few years there has been a surge of fashion and technology amalgamating together to form what has come to be known as fashtech. Wearable entertainment items fused with clothing has become the latest trend sweeping across the world. Leading the way was of course Apple's iWatch and Google's Glasses, each having varying levels of success, but those were only the beginning. Wearable tech is taking off in such a way that other brands have taken note and are teeming with ideas.

Recently the CES 2016 event showcased many of these upcoming inventions, and with such a vast amount to pick from, we have carefully chosen our top 3 standout fashtech pieces from the show:

[separator type="thin"]

CES - SAMSUNG SMARTSUIT

One such brand at the forefront of this pairing of clothing and technology is Samsung, not exactly a stranger to ever advancing technology, the brand has stepped into the fashion ring with a line of smart clothing. Leading the pack is their smartsuit, something you could envision MI6 creating for a certain double 0 Agent.

The cuff of the suit contains a near field communication chip enabling instant connection to your smart phone, boasting features and tasks such as exchanging business cards to clients or simply unlocking your phone as you remove it from your pocket. In the future, it is touted as being able to make payments with a flick of your cuff.

CES – SAMSUNG SMARTSUIT

In addition to the suit, Samsung also unveiled a shirt with the NFC chip, primarily aimed at golf enthusiasts, giving up to date weather reports so they know just how long to play on course. Additionally monitoring your heart and breathing to keep a check on your health.

[separator type="thin"]

CES - ORPHE LED SHOES

Next up we have the Orphe shoes, a spectacular pair of sneakers featuring LED lighting. Purchase Levitra online https://www.caladrius.com/levitra/ review. With a stark contrast to the endless fitness based fashtech shoes at the show, these are purely for entertainment purposes. The lights can adapt to the surrounding music, changing colours to the beat, ideal for dancing away at your local nightclub. The colours can also be manually changed via your smartphone, connected by Bluetooth. You thought Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers were out there, think again!

led shoes fashtech sneakers

Another interesting feature is the inclusion of a 9-Axis motion sensor, enabling the shoes to record the movements of the user and whenever the shoe touches the floor. This feature is so the user can record 'scenes' to be able to share with others, the data produced is a combination of light, sound and movement. The final cool addition is the ability to add sound effects to when the shoe touches the floor, thus a virtual tap dance shoe can be created. Available in both white and black, a perfect plain canvas to showcase the illumination of the lights.

CES - 2016 Memoni Memory Mirror

Finally, we have the Memoni Memory Mirror, personally this one is the most exciting and could potentially change how we shop for clothes in the future! This device can actually change the colour of the clothing product you are wearing whilst viewed in the mirror. No need to try on endless colours to get the right one for you! With a simple hand gesture or using a mobile app you can scroll through an unlimited selection of different colours and hues.

CES – 2016 MEMONI MEMORY MIRROR

It also gives a full 360 degree view of the clothing as your reflection twists and turns. Hopefully soon department stores will start taking advantage of this unbelievable tech and begin implementing it. This could cut down shopping time in half and definitely something to keep an eye on.

Interlaced Fashion Technology Show, London

Last month I attended the INTERLACED 2015 'Future of Smart Fashion' Show that was held at Corbet Place, Shoreditch London. We have spoken about Interlaced in the past and this show was just the first step in bringing together some enthusiastic minds from different areas of the fashion industry.

Shoreditch was the perfect place to host this event as it's viewed as an area that's constantly changing but nearing maturity. A little bit like the fashion technology sector 🙂 Sure many of us have heard about 3D printing and wearables but is this technology ready for mass consumption or just another trend that will be forgotten about?

[separator type="thin"]

Since I was scheduled to appear on stage to talk about the ever changing nature of fashion and technology I decided to loosen my nerves and meet some enthusiastic entrepreneurs I normally only chat to through a computer screen.

Noemie (above) is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Clausette, a magazine about the future of fashion and she came fully prepared with a 3D printed bag from Exocet Paris. The beautiful thing about 3D printing is the ability to create complex shapes and designs that would have been impossible with current manufacturing methods and at a fraction of the cost the ability to customise designs to your liking is sure to raise some eyebrows.

FORMBYTIME electromechanical jewellery was my personal highlight once I stepped indoors. The pieces are designed by Leonhard Peschta whose family has a long history of making jewellery in their studio in Vienna although I doubt anything of this sort was even considered in the 1930s.

Each piece can change its shape, capturing the aesthetics of motion and allowing the wearer to interact with the jewellery via Bluetooth. It's a bit of a surreal experience when you see it before you for the first time so check out the video to see the jewellery in action.

Apart from forgetting one of the questions my time on stage was short and sweet. I was joined by Villy Devlioti from Cult LDN and Ivailo Jordanov from Styloko and we discussed the blurring lines between fashion and technology and the increasing importance of social media and influencers for any modern business.

Keep your eyes peeled for the videos as all the talks were recorded and Interlaced managed to get some pretty impressive names and topics on the agenda such as augmented reality and the future of retail marketing.

SMART TECHNOLOGY CATWALK

interlaced fashion technology show london-8

After a short break Corbet Place was transformed into a fashion technology runway show and I think I'm right in saying it's one of the first of it's kind in London. Pairing fashion designers with tech creators showed that the lines between fashion and technology are blurring and with the falling costs and rising interest it's only a matter of time before the sensor rich future envisioned in Minority Report is all around us.

The dresses above might look like they came out of a dystopian sci-fi movie but they're actually created by a Dutch designer Maartje Dijkstra. Maartje specialises in organic, surrealistic and hand drawn prints and the dresses above are her attempt of bringing those illustrations to life. The concept becomes even more interesting when you realise that real ink flows inside the transparent 3D printed tubes like blood running through our veins.

Another highlight was the the Kimbow interactive dress from Eef Lubbers which senses your posture and changes colour to amplify the message your body brings across.

The thread structure of the dress changes colour in a way that creates an outward movement as demonstrated by Sabina from one of our favourite travel blogs - Girl vs Globe

One of my favourites from the catwalk was the futuristic LED dress that changes colour depending on the movement of it's wearer. Fusing art and technology, the dress was created by esteemed fashion designer, Rebecca Street, and pioneering technology studio, Seeper.

Worm by the stunning Claudia Bronowicki, the dress has to be seen to be truly appreciated and it's not surprising that it's first outing was on the red carpet at the BAFTA awards in May. I managed to grab a quick video during the show so make sure to check it out.

The design utilises multiple sensors attached around the body, a dynamic system of raw data is captured and then analysed to detect the motions and gestures of the wearer, which, in turn, drives the graphics rendering.

Future Tech Collection 03

A few weeks ago I had a really hectic few days during which my view of current technology got flipped completely upside down. I attended a number of events such as VR in a Bar, the Dandy Lab shop launch and the Interlaced fashion technology show which really opened my eyes to diversity in tech and the things being done behind the scenes.

VR IN A BAR

VR in a Bar is a virtual reality event organised by Virtual Umbrella (a VR marketing agency) which aims to bring together developers, content creators and VR enthusiasts alike in a gaming bar in north London.

Companies such as Visualise, VRgo Chair, HTC Vive obsessed Psytec Games and VR Craftwork were present with their latest creations and safe to say they exceeded everyone’s expectations. VR has the potential to disrupt a number of key industries from gaming to entertainment to travel so I was very privileged to get my hands on some early tech demos.

The ability to take the user directly into an experience such as a Kasabian Concert (Visualise) or a scene from Ex Machina (NBC Universal) is going to be groundbreaking and I urge everyone to follow the goings on in this hectic yet exciting industry.

The Retail Revolution with Cult LDN

A few weeks ago I attended the #CultHosts Retail Revolution event hosted by Cult LDN in an awesome little pop-up space located below the Shoreditch railway line. The exposed brick architecture was a welcome sight although the topic quickly changed to the nature of technology and how it's transforming the retail landscape before our very own eyes.

Cat Turner and Cara Parish from Cult LDN led the discussion on future thinking of digital retail and the importance of integrating digital innovation into the retail space, alongside, Kathryn Ferguson (Film Director at Selfridges), OJ Deady (Global Social Media Analyst at All Saints) and Gemma Lacey (Content Creator and Marketer).

As brick and mortar stores become less relevant in the digital age it was interesting to hear how some brands (such as AllSaints and TopShop) are adopting a 'digital first' approach with their stores acting as just another medium through which to interact with customers.

The internet and more recently social media has had a huge impact on the conversion funnel and brands that don't interact with customers outside of the store are sure to get left behind. It's not always about a sale and digital services (think video, virtual reality, social media) are great at building up a brand image and it's recognition.

Overall the event was heaps of fun and it was great to hear how some of my favourite brands are staying ahead of the ever changing digital curve. Getting the chance to test out some revolutionary retail tech from beacons to VR headsets to digital displays (by our old favourites Inition) was also very beneficial as these products will be changing the retail landscape a lot sooner than one might imagine.
