Things To Do In London 1

[columns_row width="half"]
[column]You're never short on places to visit in London, whether it's Camden Lock where you're surrounded by the buzz of the crowds or Kensington Gardens that serve as a perfect backdrop for a mindless wander.

But how much do you actually pay attention to the places and shops that make up each area? Hidden in plain sight is a good way to describe many of East London's little boutiques so armed with my trusty Hype App a few friends and I went exploring. [/column][column]shoreditch london explore blogger hype app[/column][/columns_row][separator type="thin"]

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

As Shoreditch comes full circle with it's rejuvenation it's not surprising to see numerous bike shops pop up to ensure you get to work in style even if it means parting with a few months rent to do so.

tokyobike just off Tabernacle Street was my particular favouite. Founded in 2002 in a quiet Tokyo suburb of Yanaka, tokyobike has grown in reputation over the last decade as a maker of delicate yet comfortable bikes that are perfectly suited for city riding.

In addition to the bikes the shop is littered with trinkets and accessories for your home, all neatly organised in minimal fashion that truly live up to the company's Japanese heritage.

STUCK IN A BUBBLE

Perfect for a hot summers day, the Taiwanese bubble tea was a welcome surprise during our trip through the Shoreditch Boxpark. In it's native country of Taiwan bubble tea is the drink of choice, coming in a range of flavours such as coconut, taro milk, passionfruit, lychee and jasmine it would be rude not to give it a try.

Although the initial taste is somewhat slimey the tapioca bubbles are all natural and include elements of cassava, sweet potato and yam that give the tea it's healthy properties. If you're in the area make sure to give The Milk Tea & Pearl studio a visit.

ARTISAN SHOPPING

Past closing hours we were invited to see behind the scenes of Fiorentini + Baker's flagship Shoreditch store. This Anglo-Italian footwear brand has decided to situate itself in the busy East End which speaks volumes of their meteoric success since it's foundation in 2001.

Fiorentini + Baker's no nonsense approach to design ensures the highest quality of artisan products with shoes and bags made in small artisan factories in the south east of Italy. The shop itself shows nods to it's Italian heritage with it's old comfy leather sofas, mismatched vintage lamps and an open stock room that in itself is reminiscent of classic Victorian boutiques.

London Collections Men 2015: TGB3party

Before LCM kicked off last weekend I had the privilege of attending Matt Zorpas' (Gentleman Blogger) 3 year anniversary party at the stunning St Martins Lane hotel. Mojitos were in full flow and it was ace to meet people you regularly see through a computer screen. [separator type="thin"]

LCM ESSENTIALS

If you managed to spot a flash of green during LCM that was probably me. Farah have ben kind enough to send me a few shirts from their summer so I thought it'd be a shame not to test them out. Old Style Division favourites are of course present - Daniel Wellington watches and wooden Woodmy London sunglasses complete the look whilst the durable HardGraft bag was nothing short of essential. lcm modern gent outfit london collections 2015

The venue was the beautiful Blind Spot in St Martins Lane Hotel, recently renovated and the perfect place to host the party. The whole night was very inspirational as it showed what hard work and dedication to the craft can achieve. The Gentleman Blogger has been going for 3 years now and having followed it for the best part of 2 it was amazing to see the evolution of the site and Matt's style. When someone has a clear passion for something it simply shines through.

Westfield Use Oculus Rift to Showcase Future VR Experiences

Last month Krissy D from Interlaced and I got a little glimpse into the future of retail fashion. London shopping mall chain Westfield teamed up with virtual reality interactive experience production company Inition to showcase the key fashion trends of spring/summer 2015 using virtual reality.

Although the concept has been around for decades virtual reality experiences are slowly fighting their ground and moving from a niche interest to the future of fashion, travel and more. Companies such as Oculus Rift (now owned by Facebook), Sony and HTC (in partnership with Steam) have made huge steps in the VR world and are now offering experiences that just a few years ago were the stuff of fantasy.

westfield vr virtual reality shopping oculus rift fashtech

To think about virtual reality technology you need to look at the bigger picture. Sure, the tech will be used for gaming, including 360-degree gaming but it’s also a chance to transport yourself to literally any place in the world. Get a chance to watch gigs from the front row, the ability to look at the interior of cars at a showroom or simply visit your next holiday destination without ever leaving your bedroom.

The possibilities in this case are literally endless, who knew what the internet will be when it was in it’s infancy? It’s great that companies such as Westfield and Inition recognise the potential of VR and are starting to educate the public about it’s potential.

The actual installation consisted of three elements: interacting with giant video walls showcasing this season's major fashion trends; taking a trip into a colourful dreamscape using Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles; and using Edit Me, a giant touchscreen, to find outfits of any colour or style located in any of Westfield's many retailers.

Virtual Reality - The Experience

The Oculus Rift was of course the centre of my attention. We got to try out a three-minute-long 360-degree immersive interactive experience in three different worlds by putting on the virtual reality goggles. They contain a Leap Motion sensor strapped to the front that picked up our hands, which allowed us to turn and fly in the dreamscape world.

"There's a huge swell of interest in VR – there's probably about 20 VR headset manufacturers trying to bring products to market at this moment. Normally a web-based shopping experience is just a website but with VR, you can replicate the walking into a store experience as if you're standing in the store itself" - Stuart Cupit, the co-founder and director of Inition.

westfield vr virtual reality shopping oculus rift fashtechAlthough the virtual reality experience was limited it really gave me a glimpse into the future of fashion, catwalks and shopping. By fooling the senses a part of you actually believes you’re in a different world and with the ever faster changes in this technology I believe companies would be wise to act on its potential.

Extraordinary Experiences from Inition

Inition have worked on interactive experience installations for 15 years. They’ve worked with Nissan on producing a flying virtual reality experience and in 2014, it collaborated with Topshop to create a virtual reality fashion catwalk experience that allowed VR headset wearers to feel as if they were in the front row of the fashion show.

A Weekend In London // Photography Journal 6

It's taken me a while to put another photography post together simply because I've collected such a wealth of material over the past few months I simply did not know where to start. A few weeks ago armed with our trusty XE-1's, LD and I explored the famous Camden markets before moving on swiftly to central London and brunching at The Shard.

All the shots were taken really quickly as the weather in the capital at the moment is freezing, plus the possibility of overlooking London in a couple of hours was too much to bear for both of us. The Camden markets boast their own short yet proud history and although in recent years they may have gained attention for the huge fires the Camden Lock and Stables markets have solidified themselves as permanent features of the already historic Camden Town.

I moved to Camden Town around 5 months ago and it finally feels like home to me. The whole area is undergoing a modern regeneration similar to Shoreditch / Hoxton with prominent bands and street artists all showcasing their work here in 2015. Amy Winehouse is still an icon around these parts and it can be fun spotting stencils of her face in really obscure places.

Embankment and London Bridge are two of my favourite areas of London as they have given me numerous memories that simply cannot be described in a single paragraph. Whatever your mood Embankment is the perfect place to visit for a little introspection. You never know who you're going to meet, what you're going to see or overhear but above all it's one of the best walks in all of London.

Within an hour you can see the river Thames, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Tate Modern, St Pauls Cathedral and many other great sights 'hidden' in plain view among a myriad of listed buildings and historic bridges. Then of course we have The Shard which in my opinion is the most gorgeous building in the world.

A few years ago when it first opened I had the chance to visit the top floor and overlook London just as the sun was setting. It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life and I simply had to return in the hope of capturing that moment again. We decided on a restaurant / bar called Aqua which was located on the 31st floor and after a lightspeed elevator ride we had arrived (in more ways than one).

Although it was in the middle of the day, wine was out in full flow and undeterred by the prices it was only right that we treat ourselves. To be fair, the price of admission was enough for the view itself and there is something almost primal about overlooking a huge city, seeing these complex cultural threads from above and almost oversimpliyfing them. The word "Sonder" instantly comes to mind.

Sonder - n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

Casely Hayford London Collections Men Autumn Winter 2015

Casely Hayford are a London based father (Joe) and son (Charlie) design duo that started in 2009 with a vision of creating unique London style pieces for an international audience. Their looks fuse sportswear with tailoring and high art with street culture and technology. Having both studied at St. Martins, Joe is the former Creative Director of Gieves & Hawkes while Charlie apprenticed under his father whilst styling musicians from British band The xx to hip hop artists such as Nas.

After the Duchamp LCM show I met up with my friend Kristina at the Old Sorting Office on New Oxford Street for Casely Hayfords' much anticipated Autumn / Winter 2015 runway show. The place was buzzing for the 'Runaways' collection which was supposed to draw inspiration from a group of runaways looking for a new way of life outside the narrow confines of modern city life.

The show itself was very fast paced with drum & bass and hip hop instrumentals blaring over the sound system, I even suggested the DJ host a rave night in the future because the music selection was pretty impeccable. What really stood out for me in the collection is the versatility of layers that were on display. Where to order Viagra, here https://www.rmhc-richmond.org/buy-viagra-100/ cheapest Sildenafil no prescription. The contrasting futurist techno prints of fleece sweats converge with the geometric lines of deconstructed puffas, which are presented as the new leather and nylon “Deflated Down” Jackets.

This season Casely-Hayford presents three unique collaborations – developing footwear, eyewear as well as moving into the wearable tech arena which is an area I'm really interested in so watch out for some more write-ups in the future covering wearable tech.

Shoreditch Street Art Tour with Graffiti Kings // Photography Journal 5

At the beginning of last month myself and a few fellow bloggers were invited by Logitech UK to undertake a street art and graffiti tour of Shoreditch / Hoxton and having had an interest in the subject for as long as I can remember it was an offer that was difficult to decline. We started out our day with breakfast at The Hoxton, a charming hotel based right in the middle of Great Eastern Street. Throughout the day we were guided by an expert from the Graffiti Kings called Frank who may have looked like your best mates dad but had an awesome history of tagging and used to sneak into train yards when he was younger in the hope of making a street name for himself.

Logitech were kind enough to provide us with iPads for the day, their new Keys-to-go portable bluetooth keyboards  and protective covers to make the whole experience as efficient as possible. We were also joined by Kate Forster, a professional Instagrammer who was on hand to give us challenges en route and some of her own mobile photography tips. As you will see by the images below I forgot to take the protective cover off my iPad so some pictures turned out with a slightly unwanted soft focus effect but hey, you don't get anywhere without trial and error.

Graffiti Kings that I mentioned above are a group of graffiti and street artists that work with some of the worlds biggest brands developing street art so it was amazing to hear some of Frank's stories about street art that he got to experience first hand. Frank also had a knack for pointing out pieces that most of us would have missed such as the work of Ben Wilson who has been dubbed 'The Chewing Gum Artist' because of his reliance on chewing gum to create some of his smaller pieces.

adore endure each other village underground hoxton

Frank also talked about the difference between graffiti and street art and how graffiti is often seen as something which scars the landscape, a sign of urban decay and generally something people look down on. Street art on the other hand enhances an area or a building and graffiti can be considered a form of street art (if done well) and comes in different forms such as stickers, stencils, installations and 3D paintings. In some of the images below you will see the diverse nature of street art and the way it has amplified the Shoreditch / Hoxton area in the past few years.

One of the most prominent street artists whose work we saw was Paul Don Smith. His signature is known as the ‘banker’, an image of a businessman wearing a trilby hat which looks like a tap with running water. You will be able to spot Paul's signature in some of the pictures below but if you can't here's a tip - he loves to tag iconic figures and prominent public icons.

Throughout the tour there was a real international flavour to the works with artists hailing from Paris, Rome, New York, Portugal and of course London. Space Invader was my particular favourite as this artist from Paris actually has his own iOS app 'FlashInvaders' that you can download and earn points by spotting his works around the world.

Next on the agenda was Blackall Street in Shoreditch and to say it's awash with art is an understatement.  Located just off Great Eastern Street it is a glorified art alley which forms the back end of a number of old warehouse type buildings.

Numerous artists such as D7606 with his phone box paste ups, Dscreet with his owls, Stik, Pablo and Delgado have tagged the walls here and I also managed to spot a couple of pieces by the French street artist C215 who has been described as "France's answer to Banksy".

shoreditch putin political art shoreditch graffiti woman wall creative blood agency shoreditch shoreditch graffiti walk

shoreditch skyline of street art soon to be demolished

The Leonard Street carpark (above) attracted big names in graffiti such as CEPT, Cyrcle, Mysterious Al and Rone over the years, but as you can tell from the picture the much loved street art area will soon be gentrified to make way for flats and a swanky hotel. The piece on the far right by Rone was by far my favourite of the tour and really illustrates the fragility and short lifespan of most of these works. I wonder if the workers felt any sort of compunction when tearing it down or whether they simply paid it no attention (A larger image of Rone's work is shown below).

'UR SO PORNO BABY' by Mr Dot Fahrenheit was a piece that caught my eye immediately. I don't know why I liked the saying but perhaps the small shock factor and sounding like an Austin Powers quote probably had something to do with it.

Further on the tour we found a 3D face created in concrete by Vhils from Portugal who worked on the piece for a number of hours using only a few hammers and chisels. I urge you all to check out his work as it's truly exceptional, this little piece in Hoxton was just a small teaser.

shoreditch graffiti walk shoreditch graffiti walk ur so porno baby london street art london

shoreditch architecture buildings urban

Street artist from Sheffield by the name of Phlegm also made an appearance as his striking style can be spotted from a mile away. Phlegm's artworks focus on long limbed half-human, half-woodland creatures and are almost seen as something from a surreal parallel monochrome universe.

Throughout the day we began spotting street art pieces all over the place including some hard to find side-streets, tops of buildings and telephone boxes. It's interesting that most people don't look up when walking through their city but street artists are putting on a strong case to help us curb the habit.

The main picture below was again taken on Blackall Street which was one of the locations for our Instagram competition with Logitech. To get the perfect shot I ended up using the protective cover as a makeshift tripod and editing the final result with the VSCO Cam iOS app.

Logitech Keys-to-go Portable Keyboards

logitech portable keys technology ipad logitech portable keys technology ipad

After the tour was over we were given the chance to catch a breather back at The Hoxton, grab some lunch and go over our shots with Kate and get them ready for the mini competition. Frank was also on hand to provide some last minute info about the graffiti artists we managed to spot through the day.

I started working on this post straight away as my working memory is poor at the best of times and here's where the Keys-to-go portable keyboards really came into their own. After pairing the iPad and the keyboard via bluetooth I could work effortlessly while still engaging in conversation with my group and the tactile response from the keys made the actual process of typing more enjoyable than simply tapping on a glass screen.

The keyboard itself was ridiculously thin and also covered in something called FabricSkin which means you no longer have to worry about things like crumbs and unwanted coffee spills. Having used my Keys-to-go keyboard for a few weeks now I have found it to be pretty indispensable for blogging as it's lightweight and simple nature makes it the perfect portable companion.
