Exploring the House of Vans Skatepark, London // Photography Journal 26

I really dislike people who say "I'm bored" and expect something to happen on a whim. Either stop being boring or go out there an make something happen. A few weeks ago I wanted to explore the Leake Street Tunnel (also known as the "Banksy Tunnel" or "Graffiti Tunnel") as I heard there was a street art competition going down and during my casual wanders I stumbled upon the House of Vans indoor skatepark, the opening of which I covered this time last year. Serendipity and all that 🙂

At it's core House of Vans is an indoor skate park, a live music venue, an art gallery, a cafe, a bar, and a cinema. It's basically a cultural hub for the new generation of young Londonders which is why it was fascinating to see how they would react to the VR headset that accidentally fell out of my bag. I think the picture on the left is very telling with a 5 year old instantly hooked on the virtual reality experience.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

House of Vans was actually a perfect place to test out this medium as it was in this very venue where I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time, a movie that continues to have strong cultural and somewhat historical significance. The introduction of VR into the mainstream is going to turn a number of established industries, such as film, on it's head. In a world where everyone is looking for that fulfilling experience, whether it's skateboarding or a piece of art, the progress of technology will bring us closer to that intangible feeling.

The fascinating thing about the picture above is that the kid is not even using a full VR headset. It's just a mobile phone with a virtual reality case that anyone can get for less than £10. With the latest 360 video capabilities of YouTube I expect everyone to have an understanding of this experience by this time next year. If you ever tried VR please leave a comment below, I'm truly interested as to what you thought of it.

House of Vans itself was filled with some fantastic individuals who clearly appreciate the opportunity Vans has provided and take care of it as one big family. The place providers lockers, food and other on site assistance should you require it but it's worth popping in for a visit (it's free!) and see the venue in full.

Make sure to visit the official House of Vans website to get the full list of upcoming events (Back To The Future next week anyone?) or just pop in for a visit if you're in the area:

Louis Vuitton LV Series 3 Exhibition, London // Photography Journal 24

The Louis Vuitton Series 3 Exhibition is up and running in London and I thought I'd put a little post together to showcase the experience. The exhibition finishes next Sunday (18th of October) so if you 're gonna be in the area or simply want to find out more about the LV brand I highly recommend popping in for a visit or even a free guided tour!

Just like a runway show, the Series 3 Exhibition plays on and exaggerates certain design elements of a collection. In this instance the focus was on the 'malle’ (trunk) case that has stayed with the brand in one way or another since it's foundation in 1854.

The exhibition shows how Louis Vuitton was the first malletier to manufacture a flat-topped trunk that was both lightweight and airtight making it perfect for long distance travel. Prior to this, trunks had rounded tops for water to run off, and thus could not be stacked.

HOW IT'S MADE

Part of Louis Vuitton's charm and fame comes from an intricate attention to detail and care they show to their products.

[/column]

I got to experience this first hand as a LV representative was actually working inside the exhibition and showcased the way each bag is put together and the delicate touch needed to ensure utmost quality and craftsmanship.

[separator type="thin"]

On the day I was joined by Themba (you may remember our interview with him) which was heaps of fun as we ended up jumping from room to room getting that perfect shot. The exhibition itself holds many surprises and interactive rooms that are sure to keep you busy so instead of spoiling it all for you here I highly recommend you give it a visit.

Interlaced Fashion Technology Show, London

Last month I attended the INTERLACED 2015 'Future of Smart Fashion' Show that was held at Corbet Place, Shoreditch London. We have spoken about Interlaced in the past and this show was just the first step in bringing together some enthusiastic minds from different areas of the fashion industry.

Shoreditch was the perfect place to host this event as it's viewed as an area that's constantly changing but nearing maturity. A little bit like the fashion technology sector 🙂 Sure many of us have heard about 3D printing and wearables but is this technology ready for mass consumption or just another trend that will be forgotten about?

[separator type="thin"]

Since I was scheduled to appear on stage to talk about the ever changing nature of fashion and technology I decided to loosen my nerves and meet some enthusiastic entrepreneurs I normally only chat to through a computer screen.

Noemie (above) is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Clausette, a magazine about the future of fashion and she came fully prepared with a 3D printed bag from Exocet Paris. The beautiful thing about 3D printing is the ability to create complex shapes and designs that would have been impossible with current manufacturing methods and at a fraction of the cost the ability to customise designs to your liking is sure to raise some eyebrows.

[separator type="thin"]

[columns_row width="half"]

[column]

FORMBYTIME electromechanical jewellery was my personal highlight once I stepped indoors. The pieces are designed by Leonhard Peschta whose family has a long history of making jewellery in their studio in Vienna although I doubt anything of this sort was even considered in the 1930s.

Each piece can change its shape, capturing the aesthetics of motion and allowing the wearer to interact with the jewellery via Bluetooth. It's a bit of a surreal experience when you see it before you for the first time so check out the video to see the jewellery in action.

[/column]

[/columns_row]

Apart from forgetting one of the questions my time on stage was short and sweet. I was joined by Villy Devlioti from Cult LDN and Ivailo Jordanov from Styloko and we discussed the blurring lines between fashion and technology and the increasing importance of social media and influencers for any modern business.

Keep your eyes peeled for the videos as all the talks were recorded and Interlaced managed to get some pretty impressive names and topics on the agenda such as augmented reality and the future of retail marketing.

[separator type="thin"]

SMART TECHNOLOGY CATWALK

interlaced fashion technology show london-8

After a short break Corbet Place was transformed into a fashion technology runway show and I think I'm right in saying it's one of the first of it's kind in London. Pairing fashion designers with tech creators showed that the lines between fashion and technology are blurring and with the falling costs and rising interest it's only a matter of time before the sensor rich future envisioned in Minority Report is all around us.

[separator type="thin"]

The dresses above might look like they came out of a dystopian sci-fi movie but they're actually created by a Dutch designer Maartje Dijkstra. Maartje specialises in organic, surrealistic and hand drawn prints and the dresses above are her attempt of bringing those illustrations to life. The concept becomes even more interesting when you realise that real ink flows inside the transparent 3D printed tubes like blood running through our veins.

Another highlight was the the Kimbow interactive dress from Eef Lubbers which senses your posture and changes colour to amplify the message your body brings across.

The thread structure of the dress changes colour in a way that creates an outward movement as demonstrated by Sabina from one of our favourite travel blogs - Girl vs Globe

[/column]
[/columns_row]

[column]

[column]

One of my favourites from the catwalk was the futuristic LED dress that changes colour depending on the movement of it's wearer. Fusing art and technology, the dress was created by esteemed fashion designer, Rebecca Street, and pioneering technology studio, Seeper.

Worm by the stunning Claudia Bronowicki, the dress has to be seen to be truly appreciated and it's not surprising that it's first outing was on the red carpet at the BAFTA awards in May. I managed to grab a quick video during the show so make sure to check it out.

The design utilises multiple sensors attached around the body, a dynamic system of raw data is captured and then analysed to detect the motions and gestures of the wearer, which, in turn, drives the graphics rendering.

National Gallery, London // Photography Journal 23

A few weeks ago the National Portrait Gallery was holding an Audrey Hepburn exhibition and seeing as I've seen her face all over Tumblr and Pinterest over the last few years I joined up with Krissy D from INTERLACED to find out more about this style icon.

[separator type="thin"]

london explore national portrait gallery trafalgar square-26

As girls are usually late for any kind of meeting I decided to explore the area and see if there's more to Trafalgar Square than meets the eye. Trafalgar Square actually holds a huge significance in my life as it was here around 13 years ago that I got my first taste of London as I climbed on top of one of the bronze lions that adorn Nelson's Column. A little fun fact about the lions is that they were actually melted down from the cannons aboard French and Spanish ships that had taken part in the Battle of Trafalgar.

National Gallery and the adjoining National Portrait Gallery were opened to the public on 10 May 1824 and since then it's undergone a number of cosmetic and architectural changes, most notably the work on renovating the Parthenon-esque front of the gallery.

Although we know the structure as it stands today, at the time it received public criticism before it was even completed, as an early version of the design had been leaked to a newspaper.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

The entire National Gallery is a living exhibit as you feel like you're walking through the history of art, starting with early Christian fresco's and finishing with some postmodern art of the 20th century. The entire gallery is a mathematicians paradise with perfect angles and symmetrical shapes adorning the place and 4 huge glass domes letting in natural light from the outside.

audrey hepburn exhibition london national portrait gallery

The National Portrait Gallery was also a welcome surprise as I've just started getting into people photography and it helped me realise the importance of feeling relaxed when taking as well as posing for photos. As a photographer it gives you much more flexibility if your subject is relaxed and comfortable being around you.

The 3D printed model of Tim Berners-Lee (best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web) got me giddy as without him it would be impossible for this technology to exist in the first place. Although still in it's infancy 3D printing has the potential to seriously disrupt a number of global industries. If you're interest in these kinds of things check out my latest TECH ROUNDUP.

The Audrey Hepburn Exhibition was an interesting one as it showed the snowballing nature of success and just how different the media landscape was in the 50s. Although looks didn't hold her back, it was Audrey Hepburn's charm that won over many writers and producers who wanted to work with her despite the obvious lack of experience. The wall of magazine covers at the end of the exhibition don't do justice to her career which has spanned well over 4 decades but serve as great motivation to anyone thinking that it's too late to start.

I'm a sucker for some trinkets so decided to pick up some snaps and polaroids to decorate my room. Images of Audrey were of course a must, a young David Bowie as well as some close ups that caught my eye. No room would be complete without a CEREAL Mag (this one focused on New York) and the latest Farfetch Curates coffee table book in which the focus was on all things design in 2015.

Birds Eye View, The Shard // Photography Journal 18

If you ever want to see London from a completely new dimension I always recommend a trip to The Shard's Viewing Gallery. For around £20 you can go 800ft up the 1,016ft high skyscraper and see the breathtaking views around. It's located just south of the Thames in Southwark and walking distance from the London Bridge underground station.

[separator type="thin"]

The ideal time would be to go at dusk as you get to see the city slowly change before your very eyes from a bright European city to a dark, almost Blade Runner-esque neor noir metropolis. You have plenty of time to look around so don't rush the pictures, your Facebook friends can wait. Instead try to see how many famous landmarks you can find with the naked eye and try to take in the view.

the shard london bridge vsco london-6

My little sister was in town so what better way to impress a 13 year old than thrusting her right into the deep end of a new town. Teens seem to be preoccupied with their mobile phones so I was kinda glad when hers ran out of juice and we managed to grab a few snaps together.

I would consider The Shard my favourite building in the world as in my opinion it's iconic. It's a feat of architectural engineering as it has 11,000 glass panels (which equals to around eight football fields) and was only recently pipped by the Russian Mercury City Tower as the tallest building in Europe. I would also consider it iconic as it's a perfect representation of the time and culture in which it was built and just like the Tower of London across from the river it will stand the test of time.

Notting Hill Carnival, London

Another year and another Notting Hill carnival was upon us with crowds flocking to Notting Hill Gate, drawn in by the promise of cheap alcohol, coconut cocktails and of course an opportunity to really let loose with the dance moves. The squad and I were out in full force (rain ain't gonna stop us!) so there was little time to grab pictures but thankfully Dominika Scheibinger was on the scene to capture the moment. Here are some of my favourites:

[separator type="thin"]

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL - THE PEOPLE

The best thing about Notting Hill has got to be the people. The place is buzzing with energy and you're always bound to run into someone who leaves you with an impression. It's also a time to be social as you didn't come out all the way here just to stand in a circle with your friends right? Grab your mixer bottle and share it with the person dancing next to you. What's the worst that can happen?

people photography london

This is also the perfect time to get crazy with your outfits. If you think Somerset House is crazy during fashion week then you have another thing coming. Carnival outfits and face paints are a must, the louder the better. I personally chose to wear my secret space hamster top as I do every year so if you see someone wearing it it's likely to be me.

[separator type="thin"]

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL - THE PARTY

Next comes the street party and let me tell you that here most bets are off. You're expected to dance, drink and smoke until your body tells you otherwise and with over a million visitors attending the carnival you may as well let loose. As well as the live bands and floats, there were the mandatory jolly dancing policemen which were a welcome break from the hum of the party itself.

Finding small street parties off the beaten track has to be one of the best things about Notting Hill. You will always find a group of people dancing around a boombox or sound system without a care in the world so make sure to follow your ear rather than your eyes in the future.

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL - THE AFTER PARTY

The Tonga Balloon Gang were out in full force with a secret 'bring your own booze' after party going heavy until the wee hours of the morning. Started by the former Streets frontman Mike Skinner and his partner in crime Dave Murkage, Tonga aims to bring a classic house party feel to a club night. I use the term 'club' figuratively as the first Tonga night was held in a pub in Dalston and it was everything I hoped it would be.

If you wish to find out more about Mike Skinner and the Tonga night make sure to visit these links or catch the gang at the Bollywood Tent at Bestival next Friday.

Things To Do In London 4

Another weekend has come and gone and without even noticing, Autumn has slowly crept upon upon us. I hope everyone has had a fun filled summer (I certainly have!) but don't despair as the gloomy days can be swiftly turned around. The great thing about London is that you're never short on things to try and do. 2am on a rainy Tuesday? Not a problem. There's bound to be that free concert/gallery opening/social event you can attend to keep yourself occupied.

[separator type="thin"]

#THEBLOGGERSMARKET

london weekend summer sunshine photography vsco-8

#TheBloggersMarket is back! Hosted by the lovely Liv from What Olivia Did and her girls (Carrie from Wish Wish Wish, Lucy from Shiny Thoughts, and Dunya from Dearest Deer) the event built on the success of the first Blogger Market held back in January.

Although predominately a girl / girl blogger event it was still great to run into some familiar faces such as Joseph from Unlimited by JK, Ben from 21st Century Gent and Miguel Santana who has an eye to die for (seriously, check out his Instagram, it's ridiculous).

The place was filled with energy and bloggers who got straight down to business - finding the perfect outfits from the clothes rails and boxes dotted around the room. Hair and makeup top ups were held in adjacent rooms as well as a live music performance by Shannon Wardrop so there was something on offer for everyone.

Make sure to follow the blogs above as undoubtedly there will be another bloggers market underway and it would be awesome to see you all there!

WATERHOUSE SQUARE

My eye is always wandering and on my way to the bloggers market I simply had to take a peek through a doorway I saw across the road.

Boy was I glad I did as behind it was Waterhouse Square, an internal courtyard at the rear of the Prudential Assurance Building (commonly known as the Holborn Bars).

[/column]
[/columns_row]

Famous for it's red gothic architecture, Waterhouse Square was designed between 1885 and 1901 by architects Alfred Waterhouse (who also designed the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall) and his son Paul Waterhouse. If you're a fan of historic architecture this has to be one of the go-to places in London.

CATCH THE LAST RAYS

You might think that summer is the perfect time for a picnic but don't discount autumn just yet! There's nothing better than being impulsive, grabbing a hamper, a close friend and a bottle of red to make the most of the warm rays the sun is giving us.

Green Park and Hyde Park are my particular favourites but if crowds aren't your thing then finding a secluded spot in Regents Park is your best bet.

VIVIAN MAIER photo collection london art

[/column]
[column]

VIVIAN MAIER

Vivian was an American street photographer who rose to fame in 2007 after a collector from Chicago found a number of boxes filled with negatives and began uploading them to sites such as Flickr in the hope of finding the creator.

Critical acclaim and interest in Maier's work quickly followed and looking at her pictures it's easy to see that she had a knack for unique captures.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

Her framing and experimentation with double exposure photography got me hooked and the more you explore her photos the more likely you are to find one that sticks with you for some time. I believe all great art should do just that.

The Vivian Maier Exhibition is being held at Beetles & Huxley until 5th of September (this Saturday!) so if you're by Picadilly Circus make sure to stop by. Address: 3-5 Swallow St, London W1B 4DE, Telephone: 020 7434 4319

[separator type="thin"]

I've long held a fascination with architecture and I can never quite put my finger on why that is. I mean, who can really explain the things they're attracted to? I just find it extraordinary that whichever structure you look at, whether it's The Shard or a little flat at the end of your street, they all started out as an idea in someones head.

To go from something intangible like a thought to New York's Guggenheim Museum is a huge leap of imagination and creative endeavour and the amount of work that it took to achieve is impossible to comprehend.

ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS

The Royal Academy of Arts is an independent, privately funded institution run by prominent artists and architects for the purpose of enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate.

A stones throw away from the Vivian Maier exhibition the Royal Academy of Arts is a pleasure to stroll through as the courtyard is enveloped by Burlington House, an ornate seventeenth century mansion  that the Royal Academy of Arts have called home since 1867.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

As Burlington House is situated bang in the middle of modern-day Mayfair I decided to try my hand at some people photography in the hope of capturing some real London style. Suffice to say it didn't take long as one of the member of the Academy was nice enough to let me take a few snaps.

Things To Do In London 3

Following on from my previous post where we spent breakfast at the rooftop cinema club and lunch by Tower Bridge, I decided to try out another London pastime that has been part of this city for generations.

[separator type="thin"]

ESCAPE THE HEAT

Clerkenwell & Social farringdon blogger

First stop was Clerkenwell & Social in Farringdon, a new cocktail bar from the Marylebone Leisure Group (the guys behind The Marylebone, Primrose Hill's The Princess of Wales, Barsmith nearby and two venues over in Uxbridge). The place has been fully redesigned and no longer looks like a classic bar it did previously; hanging lights and neon littered the interior while the benches outside were heaving with the bustling East London crowds.

Krissy from Interlaced and I decided to share a cheeseboard and a bottle of red wine which may have been a bit premature for a lunchtime session but in fairness cheese and cocktails just do not go together. As per usual many life stories, troubles and holiday plans were shared and Krissy mentioned something she picked up on during the Iris Apfel documentary with Lipton. The importance of experimentation with style, being yourself, being happy and staying curious.

Curiosity and a sense of humor, according to Iris are fundamental qualities of life and it would be a waste to spend time with someone who does not appreciate this. I think that something about this quote really stuck with both of us.

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE

Clerkenwell & Social farringdon blogger

In the evening I was lucky to be invited to a private cocktail making sessions with Woodford Reserve at the South Palace Hotel. Woodford Reserve actually flew in a whiskey expert from their offices in Kentucky to explain to us how the bourbon should be tasted and what kind of mixers we could use to create a great cocktail in private.

Of course I tried my hand at a little cocktail making session and I gotta tell you, Tom Cruise in the 80’s made it look easy. Once you realise how much effort and knowledge is required to make a perfect drink you’ll have newfound appreciation of your regular bartender. The measures have to be pretty exact as less is most certainly more in this case and you don’t want a drink that’s overpowered by a single smell. You also don’t wan’t a drink that’s pure ethenol so remember that modesty is key.

The Retail Revolution with Cult LDN

A few weeks ago I attended the #CultHosts Retail Revolution event hosted by Cult LDN in an awesome little pop-up space located below the Shoreditch railway line. The exposed brick architecture was a welcome sight although the topic quickly changed to the nature of technology and how it's transforming the retail landscape before our very own eyes.

Cat Turner and Cara Parish from Cult LDN led the discussion on future thinking of digital retail and the importance of integrating digital innovation into the retail space, alongside, Kathryn Ferguson (Film Director at Selfridges), OJ Deady (Global Social Media Analyst at All Saints) and Gemma Lacey (Content Creator and Marketer).

As brick and mortar stores become less relevant in the digital age it was interesting to hear how some brands (such as AllSaints and TopShop) are adopting a 'digital first' approach with their stores acting as just another medium through which to interact with customers.

The internet and more recently social media has had a huge impact on the conversion funnel and brands that don't interact with customers outside of the store are sure to get left behind. It's not always about a sale and digital services (think video, virtual reality, social media) are great at building up a brand image and it's recognition.

Overall the event was heaps of fun and it was great to hear how some of my favourite brands are staying ahead of the ever changing digital curve. Getting the chance to test out some revolutionary retail tech from beacons to VR headsets to digital displays (by our old favourites Inition) was also very beneficial as these products will be changing the retail landscape a lot sooner than one might imagine.

Things To Do In London 2

According to Londoners the capital is officially hotter than the sun this week so instead of wasting your time grumbling about it I decided to throw a few ideas together that may liven up your day.

Why sit inside a dark room for hours when you can visit the Rooftop Film Club in Hoxton, grab a drink and catch some rays while watching a forgotten classic. On this occasion Lipton Ice Tea invited me to watch Iris Apfels' new documentary 'IRIS' as part of their #BeADaybreaker campaign.

Although the start time was at 7am we had ice teas and Iris' dry and sarcastic sense of humour to keep us company. It was a slightly surreal way to start off the day, but the doc gave me a lot to think about and I will be putting up a full review later on this week.

The great thing about starting your day off early is that it gives you the motivation to really make the most of the day. You're already out and about, might as well do something interesting.

LUNCH IN SOUTHWARK

San Pellegrino mineral water pop up shop

Later on in the day we traveled down to Southwark for a San Pellegrino pop up, a casual fine dining experience with up-and-coming British Chef Chris Denney. The Italian style food fused with British ingredients really got the taste buds tingling and the location could not be any more perfect for a scorching day.

Sitting in Potters Fields Park with friends and munching on professionally prepared food is what summer is all about because no doubt when winter comes we'll be wishing for these times all over again.
