Style DVSN Collection 11

Happy March everyone! With Valentine's Day behind you don't forget that it's Mother's Day this month so saying thank you to the other love in your life should be top priority. It's been a busy few weeks for me as well, so if you don't have time to read through all the articles this inspiration collection should keep you up to date:

I finally made the plunge and upgraded from my Fujifilm XE-1 to a 'big boy' Canon 7D camera. With a 35mm Sigma lens on the way the visuals on Style Division should slowly change and become brighter and sharper. The new camera should allow me to do a lot more street style as well as travel photography so make sure to keep an eye out and if you have any Canon tips, send them my way.

Rome, Italy

I've been teasing out this post for so long now I've actually visited 2 other counties since Italy and yet I keep coming back to that magical little place. With my obsession with architecture escalating to a whole new level this year I feel that a history based post about Rome won't do the place justice. Watch this space as you never know when creative inspiration may strike and I pull an all nighter and finally get round to editing those photos.

Style Division Explores is a new series I've been putting together using photos from 2015 and so far I've written about Brighton, Kings Cross, Canary Wharf and Leeds in West Yorkshire.

These posts allow me to put thoughts to paper and showcase a little visual story about these locations. Watch out for many more Style Division explores posts in the coming months 🙂

London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week reaching a new level of hectic this year. With more and more photographers, models and designers packing the streets it was difficult to grab those unique shots we all crave.

On the flipside though it's always great to see some familiar faces on the street style circuit and see some of the finer outfits London has to offer. Hope to see you at the next LFW in September!

London Collections: Men

The disparity between London Fashion Week and London Collections is pretty noticeable but not in a negative way. As LCM is still in it's infancy things feel a lot less hectic and there's a greater variety of shows on offer.

On top of the shows I was also commissioned by Fucking Young mag to grab some street style shots with my new camera which you can see by following the link above.

Things To Do In London 5

Our bustling city never sleeps and as the seasons change so do the events and attractions. From street food markets to pop up galleries and late night exhibitions, London has it all. The difficult part is actually choosing something to do and enjoying it to the fullest without worrying that you made the wrong choice. As a side note, the cover photo was taken by Laura McGregor and I'm kinda in love with it 🙂

Columbia Road Flower Market

The Columbia Road Flower Market is one of London’s most visually appealing markets and buckets of flowers are on sale here every Sunday. I must admit, I haven't visited the flower market since the summer although now that the weather is picking up a return trip is definitely in order. During my last visit I picked up a little orange tree that has really brightened up my room so there's something on offer here for everyone. To get the best bargains turn up very early or just as the market is closing down (usually around 2pm) and grab yourself a deal.

Mademoiselle Privé - Saatchi Gallery

anton dee coco chanel exhibition

Mademoiselle Privé, was an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery that showcased a journey through the origins of CHANEL's creations capturing the charismatic personality of Mademoiselle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld. The exhibition highlighted historical aspects of fashion such as Haute Couture, the re-editions of the High Jewellery "Bijoux de Diamants" collection and the timeless CHANEL N°5. Although the exhibition is now closed you can read more about it in this amazing piece by The Guardian.

Mad About The Boy

mad about the boy lou dalston

Curated by Lou Stoppard, Mad About The Boy explores fashion’s obsession with youth, focusing on the way ideas of the teenage boy are constructed through specific collections and fashion images. The concept of neoteny is nothing new in fashion as youth is 'rewarded' with empty promises during a time of perceived infinite opportunities and creative freedom. The exhibition is on until next month at the London College of Fashion, Fashion Space Gallery so make sure to give it a visit if you're around Oxford Circus.

Artichoke have a reputation for bold, groundbreaking outdoor arts events and they love to invade public spaces with extraordinary and ambitious art. The Lumiere Festival did exactly that with unique installations popping up all over London including Piccadilly, Regent Street and St James's, Trafalgar Square and Westminster, Mayfair, and King's Cross. The installations ranged from flying sea creatures to visual projections and a transformed Leicester Square that brought the area to life.

Leeds, West Yorkshire // Photography Journal 35

Even though I live in one of the busiest cities in the world it's always nice to get a breath of fresh air (literally and figuratively) and venture back to Yorkshire, a county full of history and until last year a place I called home. I've returned to Leeds a number of times in the past but during each visit it's rewarding to find new areas to explore or even find new perspectives around everyday places people take for granted.

Leeds, West Yorkshire

My love affair with Leeds started in 2012 when I was a lone graduate with no clue about the world or even blogging for that matter. With an expensive piece of paper from an international university under my belt I decided to take my chances and make the big move up north. Settling in was surprisingly easy although it does help that Yorkshire residents are a friendly bunch. The city itself is surprisingly small although where it lacks in size it more than makes up in fun and character.

Leeds Kirkgate Market

Leeds Kirkgate Market holds a special place in my heart as this was the place I came to every Sunday looking for fresh produce, chatting with the loud locals and grabbing a crepe with chocolates and bananas. Sometimes you just gotta treat yourself, unfortunately my 'sometimes' was becoming 'oftentimes' and I had to kick the habit no matter how much my stomach pleaded. If you do find yourself in Leeds do yourself a favour and visit this magical place, you won't regret it.

It wouldn't be a Style Division post without a mini lookbook thrown in 🙂 Recently I've been enjoying the leather products from a company called Bellroy who manufacture leather accessories such as wallets, passport holders and phone cases.

As someone who tends not to carry a wallet I've become fiercely attached to mine. The attention to detail and immaculate designs instantly separate them from the pack and of course there's the undeniable durability factor that makes these accessories perfect for unfavourable weather conditions.

I've had a few questions from people asking me about filters that I put on my photos. The truth is that VSCOCam has saved me time and time again and their darker, grungier filters give my photos the look that I'm really proud of. Minimal, dark and understated although I would advise you to play around, you never know what your eye might like.

Style Inspiration 10 – 2015 Overview

Hard to believe it's been a year since the last time I put my annual review together but I can't say that I'm surprised. When you're having fun you don't really pay attention to the time as days and weeks sort of merge together into a never-ending story with you in the center. 2015 saw Style Division develop into a standalone fashion and lifestyle mag with contributors from all over the world although our tight control of quality over quantity has not diminished.

London Fashion Week

After missing out on LCM and London Fashion Week last year I was determined to make an appearance in 2015 and ended up covering both events in winter and in summer with shows, after parties and street style shots aplenty.

My 2016 writeups went online not too long ago and with London Fashion Week 2016 starting this week I hope to see some familiar faces and having a long overdue catchup.

More Outfits

My obsession with fashion has not died down. Although I have started getting involved with different areas of the fashion sphere, a small style shoot still gets me excited as you can only plan so much while the rest has to be spontaneous and done on the day.

I have put together a list of my favourite outfits from 2015 but you can stay up to date by following my OOTD blog, lookbook or Feels page 🙂

2015 was definitely the year to stretch the travel wings and with Google Flights and AirBNB making waves there's never been a better time to do so. I travelled around Italy, Spain, Montenegro, Ireland, Netherlands (to name a few), although it still feels like I've only scratched the surface.

My favourite post has got to be from Venice so give it a read if you wish to know more about that magical little place and follow my Travel Journal to stay up to date.

4 Inspiration Collections

In my 2014 overview I talked about starting 4 different journals with a focus on music, fashion, tech and visual inspirations. Although these have not been updated as often as I would have liked, each one added a new dimension to the blog and allowed me to showcase some of my different passions.

These inspiration collections will be further refined (or merged?) in 2016 so make sure to keep visiting so you don't miss out.

My passion for photography has not dwindled and having recently acquired a Canon 7D there is now 0 excuse to take average pictures. The camera gives me a great excuse to explore London and continue updating my photography journals so the mag has a certain personal touch.

The Sigma lens is my next purchase as I wish to get up close and personal with my subjects and continue developing my eye for street style.

A Lazy Shoreditch Afternoon with Farrell Clothing

At the weekend I decided to put on some items from the latest Farrell range and explore a few new areas around Shoreditch and Brick Lane. The first stop was Old Spitalfields Market, a historic market that has operated since the 1600's when King Charles gave a licence for flesh, fowl and roots to be sold on Spittle Fields (hence the name). Spitalfields is always a busy place to visit as last week it was home to London Cocktail Week and this time the place was buzzing over the news that the famous Barber Barber hairdressers were opening their first saloon in the capital.

[separator type="thin"]

[separator type="thin"]

Having visited their Leeds saloon when I used to live there it was great to see that Barber Barber London had not lost any of it's original charm. Giving off mild Tarantino vibes the saloon kept up the image by playing classic songs from the 50s and 60s and offering full grooming services such as close shaves and haircuts using classic techniques such as clipper over comb to get the desired effect.

barber barber london shop spitalfields market-2

The biggest surprise was waiting for me downstairs as a fully operational speakeasy served me some neat whiskey (which one could enjoy during the cut) while the entire downstairs area was covered in leather sofas and classic male icons and rebels adorned the walls. Barber Barber truly lived up to it's tagline 'For Scoundrels and Gentlemen' as there's something here for you regardless of which category you may fall into 🙂

As usual I went for the classic neat look as I really hate messing around with my hair every morning. My stylist was a cool dude named Joey (just check out his Streets tattoo below!) who looked the part with his traditional Sailor Jerry type tattoos and slicked back hair. the OUTFIT

My outfit was from Farrell which was created by Robbie Williams as a tribute to his grandfather and is now carried exclusively in selected Primark stores. The grey blazer was a traditional fit and a very modern take on the classic two piece suit. Without any tailoring the blazer fit me nicely as the seams were perfectly in line with my shoulders. The jumper provided a much needed additional layer and added a nice bit of colour to the whole outfit.

Exploring the House of Vans Skatepark, London // Photography Journal 26

I really dislike people who say "I'm bored" and expect something to happen on a whim. Either stop being boring or go out there an make something happen. A few weeks ago I wanted to explore the Leake Street Tunnel (also known as the "Banksy Tunnel" or "Graffiti Tunnel") as I heard there was a street art competition going down and during my casual wanders I stumbled upon the House of Vans indoor skatepark, the opening of which I covered this time last year. Serendipity and all that 🙂

[column]

house of vans london logo

At it's core House of Vans is an indoor skate park, a live music venue, an art gallery, a cafe, a bar, and a cinema. It's basically a cultural hub for the new generation of young Londonders which is why it was fascinating to see how they would react to the VR headset that accidentally fell out of my bag. I think the picture on the left is very telling with a 5 year old instantly hooked on the virtual reality experience.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

House of Vans was actually a perfect place to test out this medium as it was in this very venue where I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time, a movie that continues to have strong cultural and somewhat historical significance. The introduction of VR into the mainstream is going to turn a number of established industries, such as film, on it's head. In a world where everyone is looking for that fulfilling experience, whether it's skateboarding or a piece of art, the progress of technology will bring us closer to that intangible feeling.

The fascinating thing about the picture above is that the kid is not even using a full VR headset. It's just a mobile phone with a virtual reality case that anyone can get for less than £10. With the latest 360 video capabilities of YouTube I expect everyone to have an understanding of this experience by this time next year. If you ever tried VR please leave a comment below, I'm truly interested as to what you thought of it.

National Gallery, London // Photography Journal 23

A few weeks ago the National Portrait Gallery was holding an Audrey Hepburn exhibition and seeing as I've seen her face all over Tumblr and Pinterest over the last few years I joined up with Krissy D from INTERLACED to find out more about this style icon.

[separator type="thin"]

london explore national portrait gallery trafalgar square-26

As girls are usually late for any kind of meeting I decided to explore the area and see if there's more to Trafalgar Square than meets the eye. Trafalgar Square actually holds a huge significance in my life as it was here around 13 years ago that I got my first taste of London as I climbed on top of one of the bronze lions that adorn Nelson's Column. A little fun fact about the lions is that they were actually melted down from the cannons aboard French and Spanish ships that had taken part in the Battle of Trafalgar.

National Gallery and the adjoining National Portrait Gallery were opened to the public on 10 May 1824 and since then it's undergone a number of cosmetic and architectural changes, most notably the work on renovating the Parthenon-esque front of the gallery.

Although we know the structure as it stands today, at the time it received public criticism before it was even completed, as an early version of the design had been leaked to a newspaper.

[/column]
[/columns_row]

The entire National Gallery is a living exhibit as you feel like you're walking through the history of art, starting with early Christian fresco's and finishing with some postmodern art of the 20th century. The entire gallery is a mathematicians paradise with perfect angles and symmetrical shapes adorning the place and 4 huge glass domes letting in natural light from the outside.

audrey hepburn exhibition london national portrait gallery

The National Portrait Gallery was also a welcome surprise as I've just started getting into people photography and it helped me realise the importance of feeling relaxed when taking as well as posing for photos. As a photographer it gives you much more flexibility if your subject is relaxed and comfortable being around you.

The 3D printed model of Tim Berners-Lee (best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web) got me giddy as without him it would be impossible for this technology to exist in the first place. Although still in it's infancy 3D printing has the potential to seriously disrupt a number of global industries. If you're interest in these kinds of things check out my latest TECH ROUNDUP.

The Audrey Hepburn Exhibition was an interesting one as it showed the snowballing nature of success and just how different the media landscape was in the 50s. Although looks didn't hold her back, it was Audrey Hepburn's charm that won over many writers and producers who wanted to work with her despite the obvious lack of experience. The wall of magazine covers at the end of the exhibition don't do justice to her career which has spanned well over 4 decades but serve as great motivation to anyone thinking that it's too late to start.

Budva, Montenegro // Photography Journal 20

You may remember a few weeks ago I posted my playlist from Montenegro as the Sea Dance Festival left me with some unforgettable memories. Unfortunately I lost pretty much all of my pictures so I was delighted when I realised that my trusty Fujifilm XE-1 was by my side during one of our gyros filled excursions.

[separator type="thin"]

I've been a fan of Montenegro in general ever since watching The Brother's Bloom so when the opportunity to see one of my favourite bands (The Prodigy) arose I simply snapped at the chance. We stayed in a town called Budva which is over 2,500 years old and is home to just 14,000 people. It's surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and forms part of the Budva riviera which is home to some of the cleanest seas and rivers in Europe.

[separator type="thin"]

Budva is the epicentre of Montenegrin tourism, known for its well preserved medieval walled city, sandy beaches and diverse nightlife. The medieval walled city, known as Old Town was a welcome surprise as it felt like walking through a scene from Game of Thrones. Small boutiques and narrow alleys, paved streets and traditional Montenegrian wine all came together for an unbelievable experience.

budva riviera sea

Montenegrins themselves are pretty hedonistic. I love that one of their main goals in life is to relax and enjoy themselves as much as possible. Because the country is used to fighting and endless wars the mentality of the older generation is a little bit jaded yet everyone we met under the age of 30 seemed to be on our level.

[column]

BUDVA AT NIGHT

Budva at night is a completely different place and there's a certain buzz of expectation in the air. Don't be surprised to see scantily dressed Russian tourists as Montenegro is one of the most popular destinations for Eastern European visitors and don't get distracted by the club reps who will try every trick in the book to get you into their open air nightclubs and bars.

We managed to stay off the beaten path and relax on a little private beach that was opposite all the commotion. Sometimes you just have to sit down and take in the moment to truly appreciate it and in that sense Budva gave me exactly what I was looking for.

Birds Eye View, The Shard // Photography Journal 18

If you ever want to see London from a completely new dimension I always recommend a trip to The Shard's Viewing Gallery. For around £20 you can go 800ft up the 1,016ft high skyscraper and see the breathtaking views around. It's located just south of the Thames in Southwark and walking distance from the London Bridge underground station.

[separator type="thin"]

The ideal time would be to go at dusk as you get to see the city slowly change before your very eyes from a bright European city to a dark, almost Blade Runner-esque neor noir metropolis. You have plenty of time to look around so don't rush the pictures, your Facebook friends can wait. Instead try to see how many famous landmarks you can find with the naked eye and try to take in the view.

the shard london bridge vsco london-6

My little sister was in town so what better way to impress a 13 year old than thrusting her right into the deep end of a new town. Teens seem to be preoccupied with their mobile phones so I was kinda glad when hers ran out of juice and we managed to grab a few snaps together.

I would consider The Shard my favourite building in the world as in my opinion it's iconic. It's a feat of architectural engineering as it has 11,000 glass panels (which equals to around eight football fields) and was only recently pipped by the Russian Mercury City Tower as the tallest building in Europe. I would also consider it iconic as it's a perfect representation of the time and culture in which it was built and just like the Tower of London across from the river it will stand the test of time.

Camden Town, London Stylegram // Photography Journal 16

Time really does fly and last week I realised that it has been a year since I made the big move to London! On one hand I feel like I've only scratched the surface of this city but on the other I'm really proud of all the things I managed to accomplish over the last 365 days. This post will serve as a 'pic dump' as there's no unifying theme, I just wanted to share some of my Instagram snaps that otherwise would never see the light of day.

Camden has actually been very hospitable to me, barring a few late night adventures and scary canal walks it's actually one of the most vibrant places in the capital. The market is always teeming with people and the side streets give you a chance for some quiet exploration. Most people associate Camden with the markets and the music scene but that's just the start of it.

Over the next few days I will be expanding my 'Ode to Camden' by talking a little bit more about it's architecture and the blossoming street art scene. There's also a small lookbook I want to share as autumn is upon us and a wardrobe rethink has got to be in order.

Cherry blossoms adorn the streets in spring and luscious greenery spreads like wildfire in the summer months as the seasons dictate the colour palette of the area. Most of these photos were taken on an iPhone 4 which in my opinion still has one of the best cameras around and it's versatility and colour capture is yet to be matched by my new Android device.

As most things in life my time in Camden was very black and white but you kinda need the black moments to truly appreciate the white ones 🙂 Make sure to visit Style Division in the next few days to see more from Camden Town or read my latest Photo Journals from The Shard and Barbican
