A Weekend In London // Photography Journal 6

It's taken me a while to put another photography post together simply because I've collected such a wealth of material over the past few months I simply did not know where to start. A few weeks ago armed with our trusty XE-1's, LD and I explored the famous Camden markets before moving on swiftly to central London and brunching at The Shard.

All the shots were taken really quickly as the weather in the capital at the moment is freezing, plus the possibility of overlooking London in a couple of hours was too much to bear for both of us. The Camden markets boast their own short yet proud history and although in recent years they may have gained attention for the huge fires the Camden Lock and Stables markets have solidified themselves as permanent features of the already historic Camden Town.

I moved to Camden Town around 5 months ago and it finally feels like home to me. The whole area is undergoing a modern regeneration similar to Shoreditch / Hoxton with prominent bands and street artists all showcasing their work here in 2015. Amy Winehouse is still an icon around these parts and it can be fun spotting stencils of her face in really obscure places.

Embankment and London Bridge are two of my favourite areas of London as they have given me numerous memories that simply cannot be described in a single paragraph. Whatever your mood Embankment is the perfect place to visit for a little introspection. You never know who you're going to meet, what you're going to see or overhear but above all it's one of the best walks in all of London.

Within an hour you can see the river Thames, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Tate Modern, St Pauls Cathedral and many other great sights 'hidden' in plain view among a myriad of listed buildings and historic bridges. Then of course we have The Shard which in my opinion is the most gorgeous building in the world.

A few years ago when it first opened I had the chance to visit the top floor and overlook London just as the sun was setting. It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life and I simply had to return in the hope of capturing that moment again. We decided on a restaurant / bar called Aqua which was located on the 31st floor and after a lightspeed elevator ride we had arrived (in more ways than one).

Although it was in the middle of the day, wine was out in full flow and undeterred by the prices it was only right that we treat ourselves. To be fair, the price of admission was enough for the view itself and there is something almost primal about overlooking a huge city, seeing these complex cultural threads from above and almost oversimpliyfing them. The word "Sonder" instantly comes to mind.

Sonder - n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

Shoreditch Street Art Tour with Graffiti Kings // Photography Journal 5

At the beginning of last month myself and a few fellow bloggers were invited by Logitech UK to undertake a street art and graffiti tour of Shoreditch / Hoxton and having had an interest in the subject for as long as I can remember it was an offer that was difficult to decline. We started out our day with breakfast at The Hoxton, a charming hotel based right in the middle of Great Eastern Street. Throughout the day we were guided by an expert from the Graffiti Kings called Frank who may have looked like your best mates dad but had an awesome history of tagging and used to sneak into train yards when he was younger in the hope of making a street name for himself.

Logitech were kind enough to provide us with iPads for the day, their new Keys-to-go portable bluetooth keyboards  and protective covers to make the whole experience as efficient as possible. We were also joined by Kate Forster, a professional Instagrammer who was on hand to give us challenges en route and some of her own mobile photography tips. As you will see by the images below I forgot to take the protective cover off my iPad so some pictures turned out with a slightly unwanted soft focus effect but hey, you don't get anywhere without trial and error.

Graffiti Kings that I mentioned above are a group of graffiti and street artists that work with some of the worlds biggest brands developing street art so it was amazing to hear some of Frank's stories about street art that he got to experience first hand. Frank also had a knack for pointing out pieces that most of us would have missed such as the work of Ben Wilson who has been dubbed 'The Chewing Gum Artist' because of his reliance on chewing gum to create some of his smaller pieces.

Frank also talked about the difference between graffiti and street art and how graffiti is often seen as something which scars the landscape, a sign of urban decay and generally something people look down on. Street art on the other hand enhances an area or a building and graffiti can be considered a form of street art (if done well) and comes in different forms such as stickers, stencils, installations and 3D paintings. In some of the images below you will see the diverse nature of street art and the way it has amplified the Shoreditch / Hoxton area in the past few years.

One of the most prominent street artists whose work we saw was Paul Don Smith. His signature is known as the ‘banker’, an image of a businessman wearing a trilby hat which looks like a tap with running water. You will be able to spot Paul's signature in some of the pictures below but if you can't here's a tip - he loves to tag iconic figures and prominent public icons.

Throughout the tour there was a real international flavour to the works with artists hailing from Paris, Rome, New York, Portugal and of course London. Space Invader was my particular favourite as this artist from Paris actually has his own iOS app 'FlashInvaders' that you can download and earn points by spotting his works around the world.

Next on the agenda was Blackall Street in Shoreditch and to say it's awash with art is an understatement.  Located just off Great Eastern Street it is a glorified art alley which forms the back end of a number of old warehouse type buildings.

Numerous artists such as D7606 with his phone box paste ups, Dscreet with his owls, Stik, Pablo and Delgado have tagged the walls here and I also managed to spot a couple of pieces by the French street artist C215 who has been described as "France's answer to Banksy".

shoreditch skyline of street art soon to be demolished

The Leonard Street carpark (above) attracted big names in graffiti such as CEPT, Cyrcle, Mysterious Al and Rone over the years, but as you can tell from the picture the much loved street art area will soon be gentrified to make way for flats and a swanky hotel. The piece on the far right by Rone was by far my favourite of the tour and really illustrates the fragility and short lifespan of most of these works. I wonder if the workers felt any sort of compunction when tearing it down or whether they simply paid it no attention (A larger image of Rone's work is shown below).

'UR SO PORNO BABY' by Mr Dot Fahrenheit was a piece that caught my eye immediately. I don't know why I liked the saying but perhaps the small shock factor and sounding like an Austin Powers quote probably had something to do with it.

Further on the tour we found a 3D face created in concrete by Vhils from Portugal who worked on the piece for a number of hours using only a few hammers and chisels. I urge you all to check out his work as it's truly exceptional, this little piece in Hoxton was just a small teaser.

Street artist from Sheffield by the name of Phlegm also made an appearance as his striking style can be spotted from a mile away. Phlegm's artworks focus on long limbed half-human, half-woodland creatures and are almost seen as something from a surreal parallel monochrome universe.

Throughout the day we began spotting street art pieces all over the place including some hard to find side-streets, tops of buildings and telephone boxes. It's interesting that most people don't look up when walking through their city but street artists are putting on a strong case to help us curb the habit.

The main picture below was again taken on Blackall Street which was one of the locations for our Instagram competition with Logitech. To get the perfect shot I ended up using the protective cover as a makeshift tripod and editing the final result with the VSCO Cam iOS app.

Logitech Keys-to-go Portable Keyboards

After the tour was over we were given the chance to catch a breather back at The Hoxton, grab some lunch and go over our shots with Kate and get them ready for the mini competition. Frank was also on hand to provide some last minute info about the graffiti artists we managed to spot through the day.

I started working on this post straight away as my working memory is poor at the best of times and here's where the Keys-to-go portable keyboards really came into their own. After pairing the iPad and the keyboard via bluetooth I could work effortlessly while still engaging in conversation with my group and the tactile response from the keys made the actual process of typing more enjoyable than simply tapping on a glass screen.

The keyboard itself was ridiculously thin and also covered in something called FabricSkin which means you no longer have to worry about things like crumbs and unwanted coffee spills. Having used my Keys-to-go keyboard for a few weeks now I have found it to be pretty indispensable for blogging as it's lightweight and simple nature makes it the perfect portable companion.

Seven Dials Street Style // Photography Journal 4

Earlier this week I had the chance to meet an old family friend for a drink and a chinwag in Seven Dials so what better opportunity to explore a little area of London I've yet to set foot in. With it being Christmas week the crowd was out in full swing, undeterred by the dull weather or the fact that most of them had to be at work right that minute doing some annual reports *yawn*.

Seven Dials is famous for it's central sundial which radiates out to seven streets of Covent Garden such as Monmouth Street, Earlham Street and Mercer Street. The sundial is actually a replica of the original 17th century monument and was only re-installed 25 years ago in 1989. Originally the sundial was removed because it attracted undesirables to the area and scuppering the plans of creating an affluent, upper class area. These plans went out the window with shops starting to sell second and third hand goods on a regular basis and it was not uncommon to find things like pigeons, owls and rare animals on display in Seven Dials.

You'll be glad to know that the days of 17th century chavs have long gone to be replaced by fashionable shops, cafes and theatres. Although it's not the biggest place I did enjoy having a stroll through the narrow streets checking out the architecture and areas of Seven Dials most people probably do not see like the Ching Court that contains some of the most striking architecture I've seen so far in central London. This open air courtyard is the perfect place to escape the chaos of city life, read a book or just meditate for 15 minutes. If you fancy a visit Ching Court is open to the public between 8 - 6pm from Monday - Friday.

Seven Dials Street Style

Since I had my camera with me I thought I'd see where the mood takes me and indulge in a little street fashion photography as I heard great things about fashion in Seven Dials. There wasn't a huge variety on offer considering the time and date I decided to arrive but most of the people I chatted with were nice and friendly and were comfortable with me snapping a few shots. Like the actual special child that I am I totally forgot to use RAW settings so the images perhaps didn't turn out perfectly but hey, photography is mostly trial and error so I'm glad I took the first albeit baby steps.

Did not ask what they were wearing but I love the fox tail scarf on the left as it goes with the history of Seven Dials when shops used to have all kinds of exotic animals on their displays (read above)

Wealth and Excess in Dubai’s Shopping Mall // Photography Journal 3

Following on from my previous post that showed my travel essentials and places to visit at night in Dubai, I wanted to tell you about the ultimate destination you probably did not even think about –the mall! The Dubai Mall is the perfect place for shopping and entertainment in the Middle East. The mall is home to just about every major fashion brand in the world, the 1,200 shops it contains make it the biggest shopping mall in the world but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The mall is host to a number of events every month and will play a big part of the Dubai Shopping Festival which will be celebrating its 20 year anniversary later on this year. The shopping festival itself lasts a whole month, attracts around 3 million people and gives one lucky person a chance to win a Bugatti Veyron. Now that’s what I call an early Christmas present!

But seriously, the mall is grand and excessive on an epic scale, everything about it is designed to be bigger and better than anything that already exists elsewhere. The Dubai Mall Fountain (similar to the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas) for example is the world’s largest dancing fountain, it shoots water jets as high as 500 ft (150 metres) into the air and it’s truly a sight to behold. Fountain shows go on every 30 minutes and it was awesome to have a relaxing meal with my team outside the mall with the fountain dancing in the background.

Although I only spent a few hours at the mall I felt as if I had barely scratched the surface, it’s difficult to describe its gigantic size and complex corridors. To give you an example one corner of the mall contained a real life dinosaur exhibit which contained all the original bones found at the excavation site. No comparable exhibit, with nearly all bones completing the skeleton, exists elsewhere else and the inner child inside me actually let out an excited whimper when I saw this 80 ft (24.4 metres) long and 25 ft (7.6 metre) high monster.

dubai mall dinosaur

dubai mall fountains

In a sense of the word, the Dubai mall is awesome and it would take you a good part of a week to explore it’s nooks and crannies. If you’ve got a sweet tooth there’s a Hersheys Chocolate World or Candylicious which contains every candy flavour ever made, there’s an indoor ice rink and even a 10 million litre aquarium tank with sharks and manta rays.

When you step outside apart from the aforementioned fountain, towering dominantly is the Burj Khalifa. For any Mission Impossible fans out there this is the building Tom Cruise was swinging on in the latest MI installment, something that was pointed out to me by every single taxi driver, as if that was the most impressive thing about this architectural marvel. The streets are also paved with exotic and unique vehicles, not that red Ferraris’ are looked down upon it’s just if you wish to stand out, arriving in a pink Rolls Royce or a bright green Chevrolet Camaro limousine is more likely to turn heads.

dubai shopping mall travelBLU09314

dubai shopping mall travel

In conclusion the Dubai Mall is a sight to behold and encapsulates the wealth and material excess of Dubai in one richly interesting building. The choice of shops, restaurants and venues beggars belief and just as well as a lot of the places do not display their prices, the thinking behind this is ‘if you have to ask the price, you cannot afford it’. Its size is an aspect that’s difficult to put into words and I haven’t even mentioned things like the indoor zoo, cinemas and waterfalls. If you find yourself in the Middle East make sure to dedicate a few hours to the Dubai Mall, it really is an experience in itself.

Exploring London – Photography Journal 1

As some of you may have guessed by my recent posts I have finally made the big move to the big smoke after 2.5 fun and exciting years up north in Leeds. My new marketing job has me working with some luxury and travel brands so hopefully some of the knowledge I pick up will seep into my future writing.

Now onto one of the greatest cities in the world - London. Having only been here a month it has seduced me and spat me back out on the other side with not even a fleeting 'thanks'. The city is literally and figuratively 'buzzing' and it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the scope of everything, luckily I had some great friends who helped me find my feet and instead of going to sleep we ended up going to a party with Heineken at the Battersea Power Station.

Now that a month has passed by and I'm slowly finding my feet I decided to create a playlist filled with Phaeleh and Summer Heart, pick up my iPhone and get lost in the city. Here are some of the shots that I took on Sunday, all taken on an iPhone 4S and edited using VSCO Cam, let me know what you think and if you wish to see more please follow my Instagram and VSCO accounts.

Creative Inspiration 07

Hey guys, apologies for lack of content these last few weeks but there has been a few things happening in the background of Style Division that I'm very happy about and hopefully all will be revealed in due time. The site has gone a slight structure alteration so the focus will be on mens style, trends and collections as well as lifestyle, photography and technology. I'm in the process of acquiring a new camera for lookbook and street/blog photography so if anyone has any recommendations please give me a shout below. So far the front runner is the Fujifilm X-Series although being the impulsive man that I am this can all change at the last minute.

So onto the collection itself, I have been experimenting with collections on Style Division for a few months now and I think regular menswear, photography and visual collections should be showcased. I'm a little bit addicted to Instagram and although my photos are all taken on an iPhone 4S there is a huge wealth of talent in the IGsphere which I wish to share with you here. If you have any recommendations or you think your work should be shown in the next photography inspiration collection tweet me @StyleDivision
