Uncle Jack Watch // Lookbook 35

Men tend to misunderstand women when it comes to shoes. "Surely one pair is enough!" they'll exclaim and yet if you give any man a choice of beautiful watches they'll say "Can I keep them ALL?". As women are drawn towards elegant products, men are drawn towards the intricate and mechanical. It's in our nature so why fight it?

This crazy theory of mine was put to the test when Uncle Jack were kind enough to send me a watch from their latest collection. Safe to say I fell in love with it instantly. The simple white face ensures it's compatibility with a huge number of outfits and a light tan leather strap can be quickly changed should it suffer some wear and tear. Make sure to check out the full collection and pick a style that suits you as there's bound to be one that takes your fancy. And don't forget to use the £10 discount code!

Photography Journal 45

I'm always a fan of an impromptu photowalk so when Richard Harris invited me to hang with his friends Jess, Jonathon, Ed, Zsuzsa and Koray I jumped at the opportunity. It was literally my first day out with the new Canon 7D so I was still getting adjusted to the multitude of functions it offered. To make the process easier I tend to photograph still objects such as buildings until I find the perfect angle and then play around with shutter speeds to get the perfect snap first time.

[separator type="thin"]

We strolled around the backstreets of Oxford Street and then onto the bohemian paradise of Fitzrovia. I'm still completely enchanted with the way neighbourhoods and areas of the city flow into each other, as one architectural style slowly takes over and dominates the view. At first we found ourselves surrounded by Victorian architecture (referring to the reign of Queen Victoria) and as we moved closer to Russell Square classic Brutalist structures such as the Institute of Education took over.

Zsuzsa was kind enough to snap this pic of me outside the police station in Fitzrovia with a funky little wall mosaic. Still loving my Bailey Nelson specs which is surprising as I have never found a pair I stuck with for more than a few months. Sometimes you just gotta find a style that suits you rather than just following the latest trends 🙂

Exploring Marylebone // Photography Journal 44

Ever since my move to London I promised myself that I will explore every single nook and cranny of this magical little city. I did this by creating a little game that anyone can play. All you need is a monopoly board and a friend who's just as silly as you. Next time you're bored or have nothing to do grab a monopoly board and pick out a card at random and that's where you're spending the afternoon. No second chances.

[separator type="thin"]

Marylebone, London

[separator type="thin"]

My luck of the draw took me to Marylebone (which is much harder to spell than it looks). Marylebone is famous for its quiet streets, beautiful Gothic, Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian architecture and quaint 'not at all London' atmosphere. Shopping and eating is what Marylebone is all about and landlords tend to rent out spaces based on an individuals suitability to the area rather than pure financial matters. This ensures Marylebone retains it's quant aesthetic and doesn't turn into the next Oxford Street where the crowds can cause some weariness.

While in Marylebone my friends over at Blogosphere Magazine were having a little tea party and as it's practically a sin to turn down cake and a good conversation I popped over for a visit. The Editor-in-chief Alice Audley filled me in about Blogosphere, its humble beginnings and ambitious plans for the future. I believe blogging and personal conversations with people are much more interesting to read than a generic fashion shoot as you get to extrapolate little details that may have been overlooked otherwise.

Editorial Assistant Albertine Brandon was also kinda enough to interview me for the next issue of Blogosphere so if you get your hands on one please let me know what you think 🙂 Overall it was great to meet some young bloggers and vloggers who are just starting to find their voice but have all the ambition and enthusiasm to be successful. Hard work pays off but you have to put in the hours. It's that simple and that hard.

A Stroll Through Rome // Photography Journal 43

With the amount of time I spend in Italy it's actually starting to feel like my second home. This time I actually had a camera with me (pre-accident with the lens) and decided to become a tourist for the day. I actually watched Gladiator on the flight over so feeling like Maximus Decimus a trip to the Colleseum was on the cards.

As a lover of architecture Rome was an utter pleasure on the eyes. From Classical and Imperial architectural styles to Neoclassical and a style I honestly didn't expect - Fascist. The type of architecture normally found in Rome became popular in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries and it's influence is still around today, most notably in the US with The White House and Supreme Court Buildings feeling pleasant to the eye for that particular reason.

Colosseum, Rome

Built of concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. Cialis brand and generic Cialis effectiveness reviews read on http://howmed.net/cialis-generic/. Unlike earlier Greek theatres that were built into hillsides, the Colosseum is an entirely free-standing structure although signs of deterioration have really begun to show. Like many beautiful things on earth it was constructed by slaves in 70–80 AD and hosted a number of gladiator fights, exotic animal hunts (which included leopards, crocodiles and bears), battle recreations and religious festivals. It is estimated that he Colosseum could hold between 50,000 - 80,000 spectators at once which is huge considering the time.

Withings Activité Steel // Lookbook 34

If you're a regular reader of Style Division you may have noticed me gushing over the Withings Activité Steel watch in my last lookbook and wearables comparison posts. Now that the watch has been in my possession for a few months I can testify its ease of use and overall versatility. Whether I'm going for a run or dressing up for a night out the smartwatch perfectly complements every outfit. I've recently picked up some green interchangeable straps to vary it up a bit but just a heads up, you're going to be seeing a lot more from Withings in the future 🙂

Those Who Lose Dreaming Are Lost // Lookbook 33

Sometimes it's easy to forget how fortunate we are to live in London and have iconic structures such as Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral literally a tube stop or two away. People take time off work and come here on their holidays so a few weeks ago Lucy from LJLV and I met up to bask in the sunshine and snap a few pics outside the iconic St Paul's.

St Paul's Cathedral

It seems that every time I wear Ralph Lauren, St Paul's is the destination. The ‘new’ St Paul’s Cathedral was designed in English Baroque style in 1708 by a mathematician Sir Christopher Wren as the word for architect was yet to be invented.

Last time I explored the area with Themba Overdaux I mentioned that St Paul's Cathedral was part of a major rebuilding project after the Great Fire of London and over the years it has become an iconic landmark.

Skyscraper designs have actually had to be altered to ensure the view of the famous dome isn't obstructed from locations such as Alexandra Palace or Primrose Hill.

Spring / Summer has got to be my favourite time of the year. The clocks have gone forward to we get an extra hour to top up that Vitamin D. It's also an excuse to wear sunglasses you haven't touched since that holiday many moons ago.

Again, I partnered up with Infinities (who supplied me with the grey Ralph Lauren hoody in my Lincoln post) to showcase another Ralph Lauren item - the forever iconic polo. For me the Ralph Lauren polo is a quintessential staple of any summer wardrobe. Make sure you get the original rather than a copy though as they may look identical but you'll see the difference after just a few washes.

St Paul's Cathedral - Dome

[separator type="thin"]

Wren drew inspiration from Michelangelo's dome of St Peter's Basilica and Mansart's Church of the Val-de-Grâce when designing the famous dome. The dome design was radically modified even as it was being built –something that's unheard of in contemporary architectural practice. The church was against the dome altogether until Christopher Wren spent most of his own savings on constructing a small replica of the final design to win over the hearts of the people in charge.

The North / South Divide // Lookbook 32

Continuing on from my previous travels I once again ended up in my home away from home - Leeds. One of my old housemates and dear friend was leaving UK on his personal adventure so it was only right I surprise him during a pubcrawl known as the Otley Run, dressed head to toe in Russian gear of course. I would like to point out that those were actual drinking rules, I haven't reached that point of 'not caring' yet 🙂

Don't Mess With Yorkshire

[separator type="thin"]

Even though the morning after was anything but pleasant it was International Happiness Day (Google it, it's an actual thing) and I made a promise to meet up with a girl I met in Leeds nearly a year ago to the day. If you make promises you have to keep them, even to yourself, so feeling utterly drained I whipped myself up a breakfast Gordon Ramsay would have been proud of and set off into town.

My friend Helena was exactly the ball of energy I remembered and just getting a small glimpse into someone else's world is fascinating to me. We create our own reality by choosing who we spend time with, what books we read and music we listen to so remember to make your reality an interesting one to live in.

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life

[separator type="thin"]

My love / hate relationship with London continues although I realise that hate is a strong word for something I admire beyond words. I feel that big cities can overwhelm but only if you let them do so. Modern metropolises such as London, New York or Tokyo borrow from other cultures but also create a unique one of their own which is why they're so fascinating to explore. You never know who you're going to meet and what stories they're going to share with you so it's best to go in with an open mind and appreciation for the random encounters in life. The city is just a backdrop.

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." — Samuel Johnson

Flower In The Crannied Wall // Lookbook 31

I moved to the UK when I was 11 years old and have grown to appreciate it's rich history and complex relationship with religion through the ages. Although I try not to debate the topic it's difficult to deny the impact religion has had on architecture. Cities such as Rome or Medina exemplify the ways in which religious thinking can influence the look and feel of a place and if those initial creative inspirations come from a divine place, who am I to argue.

[separator type="thin"]

[columns_row width="half"]
[column]

In the last few weeks I travelled around the country getting in touch with my roots and managed to visit the 4 cities that hold a dear place in my heart: Boston, Lincoln, Leeds and London. During my visit to Lincoln I had to take a little stroll around the famous Lincoln Cathedral. It was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549) and it's Gothic design looms over the city to this day.

Recently I never seem to settle on a style for my lookbooks, darting from casual street wear to smart and clean suits but at the end of the day you should wear what feels natural to you. The Zip Hooded Ralph Lauren Sweatshirt which I grabbed from Infinities was a perfect fit for the stroll while my ever present Withings smartwatch kept reminding me to take it easy on the infamous Steep Hill.

Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies,
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower—but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all,
I should know what God and man is.

[separator type="thin"]

Behind the Cathedral there is a monument to Alfred Tennyson, a Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland with the following poem titled 'Flower in the crannied wall' written on it. The poem challenged my way of thinking about beauty and how beauty is attributed rather than gained. It also encouraged me to look past the superficial and see real beauty within everything 🙂 What does the poem say to you?

Withings Activité Steel // Lookbook 30

Over the last few weeks I've been getting comfortable with my Activite Steel smartwatch from Withings as the ever growing presence of technology means we have to wear sensors all over our bodies. I did a small comparison of fitness trackers so if you're still undecided that post should give you some guidance.

Spring Has Sprung

[separator type="thin"]

spring in london

I always seem to do a lookbook when London changes colour and as with the John Lewis shoot when the streets were covered in red and orange leaves, this time we have pink petals reminding us of springtime. Most of us consider winter to be a cold and forgettable time of the year but as London becomes pink before your very eyes it's a stark reminder that it's our perceptions that change, not the seasons or the city.

Things To Do In London 6

Now that the clocks have changed you really have no excuses for staying inside. Even if you live in a smaller city you can always find some free things to do as it's the people you spend your time with that are important rather than the activity itself. Make sure to check out the first part of this post or 15 Free Things To Do In London if you ever find yourself in the capital.

[separator type="thin"]

Explore Covent Garden

[separator type="thin"]

Charles Pétillon covent garden explore balloons

My most recent lookbook was based around Covent Garden as this area has seen huge rejuvenation efforts in the last century. Covent Garden was actually known as a red light district as brothels and taverns increased in popularity hence the erection of the market helped organise the area. The market is always teeming with entertainers or art installations to keep your visit interesting and I would also recommend grabbing a coffee or a bite to eat at one of the little cafes and drinking in the atmosphere.

[separator type="thin"]

Visit An Exhibition

[separator type="thin"]

WOMEN New Portraits Annie Leibovitz

There are always plenty of artists looking to find an avenue for their voice so take a few minutes and have a look at some free exhibitions around your city. The latest one I visited has been Annie Leibovitz's 'WOMEN: New Portraits' which reflects the changes in the roles of women today as captured by Annie herself. What impressed me most about her photography was the ability to capture that fleeting moment or a unique element about the subject. Something I'm going to start striving for in my own photography.

[separator type="thin"]

Sky Garden Yoga

[separator type="thin"]

sky garden yoga walkie talkie building

There's no greater feeling than starting your morning off with a little bit of Yoga, especially if that's the view you walk out to. Sky Garden is at the top of the Walkie-Talkie. The 38-storey building is the fifth tallest in London and although the looks and design leave a lot to be desired you're not going to leave underwhelmed. The yoga classes start at 6:30 AM and you have to book beforehand but the feeling of rejuvenation and lightness you have after finishing is worth all those unnecessary minutes spent in bed. You can find out more HERE.

[separator type="thin"]

Visit a Gallery

[separator type="thin"]

As with exhibitions mentioned above it's always ace to visit a gallery, pretend you know how to talk about art and generally not take the entire experience too seriously. I recently visited the RCA 'Work in Progress' Show that showcased a huge variety of student art from paintings to sculpture to moving art. It was great to see individuals trying to find their voice through mediums they have available although there was a guy who literally drew an outline of a frog as his final piece and I wasn't sure whether he was serious or not.
