Exploring the Intersection of Art and Machine Intelligence

I've always been fascinated by the concept of artificial intelligence and whether we will know when it has truly 'arrived'. The goalposts seem to move every time I dive into the topic as many machine learning algorithms display intelligent properties that could have passed a Turing Test several decades ago.

Many of us have chatbots on our phones that can deal with basic queries while apps such as Google Now provide us with information before we even need it. The potential for AI and automation to replace jobs is almost guaranteed as we're currently seeing with brands such as Adidas, McDonalds and Uber

Whether a machine can mimic creativity is a question that has been posed more frequently and the answer to that is yes. Google for example is teaching its artificial intelligence how to understand language by making it predict, and replicate, the works of famous dead authors. Companies such as Melomics are creating brand new music using an AI while teaching a neural network about famous painters such as Picasso or Pollock can lead to some amazing results as you can see below:

[separator type="thin"]

google neural network paintersWouldn’t it be great to hire Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Suzuki Harunobu, Camille Corot or Jackson Pollock as art consultants for your photography project? Or how about game design? By looking at patterns the neural network can identify elements at multiple levels (e.g. grain, texture, strokes, composition), then use an optimisation process to help generate a new image from scratch.

This leads us further into issues of copyright and ownership and whether those concepts are outdated in the modern digital world. If a machine can randomly produce a famous song or produce a song that then becomes well known around the world, who owns the copyright? As we're slowly entering the world of abundance it will be fascinating to see these battles play out against ingrained resistance

Decided to take a distinct summery route for my latest playlists. With Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, British Summertime Festival and Boomtown coming up it's time to come out of hibernation. It's time to replace the decidedly cold winter playlists with something brighter. So put on some headphones or just kick your feet up and enjoy!

Rome at Night – A Mindless Wander // Photography Journal 50

Everyone should have a role model, someone whose character and achievements you admire. For me that person is Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin and all round crazy guy who does not like to act his age. My admiration of Richard has shaped my personality as I have a clear disregard of authority and love to take the occasional risk. Sometimes you need to take it easy and just clear your head which is why mindless wanders are becoming one of my favourite pastimes.

[separator type="thin"]

If you're a regular reader of Style Division you may have seen a few of my previous posts where I explore the hidden and touristy sides of Rome but what they failed to show was just how charming the city becomes when the sun goes down. The streets aren't littered with tourists getting in your way with selfie sticks and you can explore Rome at your own leisure. Walking without purpose has a similar effect on your body as meditation as you put your mind to rest, even for a minute, and allow your subconscious to absorb the details that surround you.

vsco cam photography travelling wanderlustvsco cam photography travelling wanderlust

Without looking at maps or guides my stroll led me to St. Peter's www.healthsupportyou.com/accutane-isotretinoin/ Basilica situated right in the centre of the deserted Vatican. Although I managed to smash my camera lens getting that perfect shot it was kind of worth it as it allowed me to see how I deal with situations I have no control over. The old me would have panicked and started the following day in a foul mood but with a clear head and plenty of time to think it's easy to see that the only way out of those situations is to disregard them completely.

The Ultimate Aural Orgasm

Music really does make the world go round and it would be a pretty grey place without it. I never shy away from trying new things and everyone should give new music genres a go, don't always stick to the tried and tested. My first ever gig was Rammstein in Nottingham when I was 15 and although I'm no longer a huge fan of rock music that initial experience holds a dear place in my heart. Since I moved to London all night raves seem to have overtaken evenings during which you simply see a band and enjoy the live performance but even this trend is starting to shift:

[separator type="thin"]

My friend Jeremy (Funster) works at Mixmag which is a fantastic publication that covers clubs and the world of dance music. When he invited me to see Shy FX, Skream and others spin at the top of ArcelorMittal Orbit I simply couldn't say no. Although it stands out like a sore thumb in the middle of Stratford’s Olypic Park the entire area has become somewhat of a tourist hotspot since it's redevelopment for the 2012 Olympic Games.

I had no idea that The Orbit had a couple of large rooms offering panoramic views across the Docklands as well as overhanging walkways should you get bored of looking through a glass window. It was great to let loose and rediscover my love for jungle and drum & bass music. Jeremy was of course ever present with his air horn and managed to get everyone to throw out all sensibilities and really enjoy the night.

Jamie XX

[separator type="thin"]

The Brixton Academy has become an iconic venue in my eyes as over the years I've seen bands such as The Prodigy, War on Drugs, Massive Attack (below) and Kings of Leon perform here and each one brought something special to the table. This time it was the turn of Jamie XX whose current rise to stardom is eclipsing that of his original project The XX.

After releasing a number of songs I would consider classic (Far Nearer / Beat For) Jamie was approached by XL label head Richard Russell to remix Scott-Heron's 2010 studio album I'm New Here. He worked on the album while touring with his band The xx in 2010 and occasionally communicated with Scott-Heron through letters for his approval to rework certain material. The album was a monumental success and reached maximum exposure when 'I'll Take Care of U' was remixed further by Drake and Rihanna for their iconic pop hit 'Take Care'.

On the night the light show based on his new 'In Colour' album played a huge part while Jamie's song selection was nearing on immaculate. He played a mix of his own singles such as 'Gosh' and 'Sleep Sound', underground house classics as well as a personal favourite 'Weak Become Heroes' by The Streets. I honestly cannot wait to see where he goes next.

[separator type="thin"]

Massive Attack

[separator type="thin"]

Massive Attack is one of those bands you've heard of since forever but can never quite put your finger on it. Over the years movies and adverts ruined their iconic 'Teardrop' for me although hearing it live for the first time brought back all those initial emotions I associated with it.

Their involvement with industry heavyweights such as DJ Shadow and UNKLE is hard to ignore while their contribution to trip-hop in general is unparalleled. The gig was bubbling with energy as the ensemble performed hits from their extensive discography while a huge board showing messages about the world economy, Syrian refugees and even Facebook tried to divert our attention.

Again the Brixton Academy proved to be a perfect venue as the downward sloping floors provided a fantastic view wherever you were stood and the acoustics amplified songs such as 'Angel' to a level I didn't think was possible. To see who's playing at the Brixton Academy in the near future please click HERE.

City of London // Photography Journal 48

I would consider myself somewhat of a shutterbug. During my endless mindless wanders I take pictures of things without really thinking about where I'm going to use them in the future. The City of London has been my latest 'victim' in this regard as its imposing architecture and rich history ensured the lens caps stayed firmly in my pocket.

[separator type="thin"]

The City of London is widely referred to simply as the City. Often written as just City and is also colloquially known as the Square Mile, as it is 1.12 sq mi in area. Packed into this small area are a number of historic institutions such as the London Stock Exchange, Lloyd's of London and the Bank of England.

[separator type="thin"]

city of london bank of england london

You'll be surprised to find a number of parks and open spaces such as the Finsbury Circus or Jubilee Garden tucked in between the grandiose structures. There is also a lovely intersection of old and new with the Lloyd's building becoming a personal favourite of mine.

The Lloyds building is a perfect example of Bowellism architecture in which the services for the building, such as ducts and lifts, are located on the exterior to maximise space in the interior. The whole structure feels like a living organism and it almost feels like a waste that it's main purpose is housing an archaic financial institution.

Topman Knightsbridge, This Is Tailoring

A few days ago I was invited to the Topman store in Knightsbridge to sample their ‘THIS IS TAILORING’ collection and start my personal summer a few weeks earlier than expected. In keeping with tailoring traditions the suits on offer have been reimagined in new ‘warmer handle textures’. Perfect for al those prom, wedding and race days coming up this summer.

Topman - This Is Tailoring

[separator type="thin"]

topman this is tailoringtopman this is tailoring

As of last Thursday TOPMAN occupies the basement of the existing TOPSHOP space at 70 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. The original store space opened in May 2010 trading over 3 floors, with TOPMAN moving into the lower ground floor the total shopping space increases to 14,400sq.ft.

To replicate the success of the Oxford Circus Personal Shopping service a brand new Personal Shopping suite will be installed serving both TOPSHOP and TOPMAN customers, with a personal shopper specifically dedicated to TOPMAN appointments. I found the personal shopper to be super friendly and honest which is what you need if you're not entirely sure about the colour or the fit.

Whichever style you settle on make sure to take it to the onsite tailors who will ensure the perfect fit for your body shape. As a man it's a nice feeling to wear a well tailored suit, it almost puts an extra spring in your step so don't cut corners! I settled on a skinny two button burgundy suit although the light blue and grey styles were ridiculously tempting.

New Faces 02 // Journal 47

In my early photography days I played it safe, taking pictures of buildings and landscapes and simply honing my skills. Over the last few months however I picked up a Canon 7D and a Sigma lens to take some interesting pictures during LCM and LFW for Fucking Young Mag. After that trial by fire I became a lot more relaxed about approaching people I've never met on the street and asking for a photo.

FashTech Summit, London 2016

Earlier this month I attended the FashTech Summit in London to represent UNSIGNED GRP and get the latest industry insights from marketers and brands who are shaping this exciting fashion technology landscape. When it was launched in 2014, FashTech was a simple meet up that focused on start-ups and panel discussions. Now, less than 2 years later and events across London, New York and San Francisco it really feels like FashTech has matured into a community hub for talent, research and bold new ideas.

[separator type="thin"]

Fashtech 2016 - The Show

[separator type="thin"]

The event took place in the heart of East London at Studio Spaces where the audience listened to presentations and panel discussions from the industry’s most disruptive and innovative thought leaders including Drew Elliot (the man behind Kim Kardashian’s attempt to #breaktheinternet) and Second Home co-founder Rohan Silva, who revealed the launch of a fashion hub in west London.

Over the course of the 2 days it became clear which trends are starting to dominate the industry. The influx of customer data now allows brands to use multiple touchpoints when analysing customer journeys and merging online and offline data together to create a more rounded shopping experience. The shift towards emotive content on blogs and social media has also not gone unnoticed with Kelly Kowal (MD Farfetch Black & White Division) saying "Wherever you discover you want to purchase. Publishers are slowly becoming retailers".

Virtual Reality

A big emphasis was placed on VR as a tool that will revolutionise retail. By placing the customer directly into an immersive experience it becomes easier for a brand to engage them and elicit a response such as a social share or an in-store purchase. Henry Stuart (Chief Executive of Visualise) said retailers can tap into VR to “create amazing experiences that push boundaries and create magical memories”. 3D scanning will enable customers to create virtual avatars of themselves which in turn can be used in virtual outlets. These outlets will allow customers to try on outfits with interchangeable backgrounds for richer shopping experiences.

Customer First Approach

The importance of placing the customer first has never been higher. Brands are really starting to think creatively about engaging their target audience. Philip Handford (Founder at Campaign Designs) highlighted the importance of creating a destination store in order to attract and engage consumers. Philip actually predicted that in the future “high streets will become a series of immersive billboards and brand lounges that will capture people’s imaginations”. Mobile phones already know intimate details of our lives (location, frequent contacts, browsing and chat history) so combining this with shopping preferences is likely to yield great results.
