LCM 16 Day 2 – London Collections Men Street Style // Photography Journal 30

I can't believe that it's been over a week since LCM (London Collections: Men) has finished and I'm only just starting to sift through the photos. Day 2 for me was much busier as I decided to do street style on Day 1 and visit a few shows on Day 2 but alas it's impossible to ignore the amazing outfits everyone had on display. Have a look through some of my favourite photos and let me know what you think in the comment box below:

It was fun to see some familiar faces (Annabel Lake and Joseph Kent above) even if we were freezing our butts off and trying to get that perfect shot.

LCM 16 Day – London Collections Men Street Style // Photography Journal 29

LCM (London Collections: Men) is upon us yet again and after being a total recluse last year I was determined not to repeat the same mistake. Fucking Young magazine asked me to take a couple of street style shots during the weekend and having recently taken delivery of a Canon 7D, LCM was going to be my trial by fire.

Here's a selection of my favourite shots from Day 1 and make sure to visit Fucking Young Magazine for the full set and some models off duty shots.

Guys of London Fashion Week 2015 // Photography Journal 27

It's not all about the girls at London Fashion Week (although lets face it, it kinda is) so here are a couple of my favourite mens street style from LFW 2015. I'm hoping to have a new camera by the time London Collections: Men rolls around so if you're coming make sure to give me a buzz, I'm always looking to sharper up my photography game.

The 'Listen While You Read' feature above is a little experiment I'm keen to run to see if my readers want a bit of background music while reading the lengthier articles. I aim to stick with some slower electronic and downtempo sounds as they're not too distracting and actually help you focus. If you think this is a neat feature make sure to give that 'Like' button a press.

Girls of London Fashion Week 2015 // Photography Journal 26

Photography can be a cruel mistress as one day you are buzzing with excitement to go and explore new places and the next you're burdened by the ever present challenges of life. I feel that it's in these moments one should channel their frustrations into their work as finding ways to waste time will get tedious in and of itself. 80% of all work is actually working yourself up to do it, the other 20% is doing it which is why I've sat on these photos for so long, never satisfied with the final result or edit.

[separator type="thin"]

LFW 2015 Street Style

London Fashion Week 2015 was a hectic and surprising affair as instead of sticking to one task I ended up doing a bit of street photography, helping out some fellow bloggers with street shoots and attending a number of shows such a Hemyca, BCOLLIDE, Havva and Sadie Williams which put my brain and twitter fingers into overload. This is part 1 of a 2 part series so check back in the next few days for the guys edition 🙂

The pictures don't do justice to the sheer hectic nature of the day and I almost felt like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz getting a behind the scenes look at how the whole business of fashion operates. Seeing through all the pizzazz and glamour allowed me to take the industry at face value and simply enjoy my day.

Photographing bloggers such as Lucy from LJLV and Hannah from Love Icon Fantasy Ego provided me with a much needed respite from the shows that although immaculately organised were strewn across London so you had to be picky with which shows were worth your time.

Keep an eye out for Part 2 of my LFW 2015 experience and if you see me at the next London Fashion Week or London Fashion Collections: Men don't be afraid to say hello 🙂

Italy Street Style // Photography Journal 17

I had some spare time to kill this afternoon so I looked through my ever growing abandoned projects pile and discovered a number of photos from my trip to Italy in which I tried to practice the art of street style photography and approach strangers in the hope of capturing their look of the day.

[separator type="thin"]

Luckily for me Italians are an open bunch and were very welcoming when I approached them to take a picture. The majority of the snaps were taken on the streets of Bologna and Padua with the styles perfectly representing the laid back nature of the cities.

Italian style is distinctive in its appearance, defined by its nonchalant nature and dedicated to achieving sprezzatura. In simple terms, if you go to Italy and try to act cool you'll be found out very quickly.

"Sprezzature - a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought to it"

[separator type="thin"]

Italian style is much more diverse than many people come to assume, with regional nuances adding variety and characterising local tastes. One thing that I found interesting is that commitment is everything and the old saying of 'beauty requires sacrifice' rings very true here.

No matter the weather, scarves and wool jackets are always an option and a dog is probably the most diverse 'accessory' one can have with them.

[separator type="thin"]

One key take away from Italy is that dedicating time to think and experiment with outfit ideas is the key to looking stylish without any apparent effort.

Just as important is the careful selection of style rules you're willing to break as there is a world of difference between knowing the rules and breaking them, and not knowing the rules and playing it by ear.

LCM SS16 Collections & Street Style Roundup

The 2016 SS menswear collections began in London over the weekend with shows from leading labels such as Topman, Alexander McQueen, Hilfiger, Coach and Ford dominating front pages of many menswear blogs.

The four day event influences menswear trends globally so it's not a show to be missed and I highly recommend it to anyone who's able to get a few invites. My attendance this year has been sporadic to say the least due to circumstances beyond my control but here are some of the collections and street style snaps that grabbed my attention.

To check out my post about the LCM back in winter make sure you read the Casely Hayford or Duchamp London posts.

[separator type="thin"]

FAVOURITE COLLECTIONS

Collections are always a chance for brands to really showcase their creative intent and really let loose with the designs. This year was no different with Topman, Paul Smith and Tom Ford (as usual) pulling out the big punches. Burberry for me was the stand out show that really managed to capture the ethos of the brand as of late.

[separator type="thin"]

BURBERRY

Showcased at the beautiful Kensington Palace Gardens the Burberry show lived up to all expectations. Light wool outfits will always feel sleek but the 70s look is coming back in a big way and Burberry has yet again managed to make their collection feel effortless.

[separator type="thin"]

ADA + NIK

A majority of my wardrobe seems to be made up of blacks so it's no surprise I was immediately drawn to Ada + Nik SS16 collection. With an almost dystopian feel the collection left a striking impression and in my opinion gave small nods to the Yeezy Originals from Adidas

[separator type="thin"]

DUCHAMP LONDON

Going in the other direction we have an old Style Division favourite - Duchamp. Elegantly layered two and three piece suits will never go out of style and Duchamp have a knack of ensuring even the greys and blacks have something new to offer.

[separator type="thin"]

STREET STYLE

I love street style shots, especially if the photographer has tried to find something unique about a moment or situation. I have an awesome little post coming up about my trip abroad and the differences in street style but here are some of my favourites from LCM this year:

Camden Street Style // Photography Journal 8

As part of my ode to Camden I decided to grab my trusted Fuji XE-1 and see what kind of styles people are rocking at the markets. As usual the weather was it's dreary self but this didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirits and the majority of people I approached seemed happy to have their picture taken.

Here are some of the best snaps from the afternoon:

Exploring Leeds // Photography Journal 8

Last month I had a chance to see off an old mate who was off an whirlwind adventure in Asia and it gave me a chance to return to the city that started it all - Leeds. It hasn't even been a year since I moved from Leeds but coming back knowing that it would only be for one debaucherous night felt a little strange.

The day started off at 8am with a searing toothache and a Bloody Mary at The Booking Office. Of all the days to choose my wisdom teeth decided to pop through and forced me to question my sanity. Dulling the pain with an insane amount of alcohol and the adventure has begun.

[separator type="thin"]

Leeds is one of the oldest and largest cities in the UK and many people overlook that fact. Leeds developed as a market town in the Middle Ages and the booming economy has helped build some of it's historic landmarks such as the Corn Exchange, Leeds Markets and the Town Hall.

leeds 2015 street style fashion photography architecture-4 leeds 2015 street style fashion photography architecture-4Modern influence is felt throughout the city with street art dispersed between the historic buildings and clear glass shopping malls. The main shopping streets in Leeds were teaming with people and I got to see the stunning domed roof of Leeds Corn Exchange (cover photo above).

I also used to work at Louis Vuitton in the upmarket shopping area called the Victoria Quarter so a trip down memory lane was in order. The place hadn't changed all that much but it did put a lot of things in perspective that I had no chance of knowing only a few years prior. Sometimes living in the past can have it's benefits.

LEEDS - STREET STYLE

Leeds has always been a stylish city, an influx of young students every year certainly helps, the annual Leeds Festival adds to the cool factor but historically it's always had a great vibe about it.

Living in Leeds you're never too far from a random house party or a random adventure in Headingley so doing some street style shots has never been easier. Here are some of my favourites from the afternoon:

OTHER PHOTOGRAPHY

Leeds is not short on gorgeous places to explore so my only regret was not being able to stay longer. Enveloped by it's charm and history and looking at the city from a new perspective I can definitely see what made me fall in love with it in the first place.

Paris Fashion Week 2015 – Street Style Photography Roundup

So another busy month of fashion has come and gone with London, Milan and Paris all welcoming fashionistas from around the world with open arms. I only had the chance to visit the London fashion week although next year the challenge is to go to at least two under my belt.

Although it was important to keep an eye out on the perfectly curated runway collections (such as the Lemaire Collection), the style on the streets outside the shows were even more important. Tiny details get scrutinised, natural light reveals imperfections and boring outfits get ignored. For me it's always exciting to see attendees try their best to stand out from the maddening crowds.

Farfetch, ELLE and WWD have sent out professional photographers to the 2015 Paris Fashion Week and I picked some of my favourite street styles they managed to capture. Let me know which ones caught your eye or even share some of your own pictures with me for a chance to be featured int he next street style roundup.

Seven Dials Street Style // Photography Journal 4

Earlier this week I had the chance to meet an old family friend for a drink and a chinwag in Seven Dials so what better opportunity to explore a little area of London I've yet to set foot in. With it being Christmas week the crowd was out in full swing, undeterred by the dull weather or the fact that most of them had to be at work right that minute doing some annual reports *yawn*.

Seven Dials is famous for it's central sundial which radiates out to seven streets of Covent Garden such as Monmouth Street, Earlham Street and Mercer Street. The sundial is actually a replica of the original 17th century monument and was only re-installed 25 years ago in 1989. Originally the sundial was removed because it attracted undesirables to the area and scuppering the plans of creating an affluent, upper class area. These plans went out the window with shops starting to sell second and third hand goods on a regular basis and it was not uncommon to find things like pigeons, owls and rare animals on display in Seven Dials.

You'll be glad to know that the days of 17th century chavs have long gone to be replaced by fashionable shops, cafes and theatres. Although it's not the biggest place I did enjoy having a stroll through the narrow streets checking out the architecture and areas of Seven Dials most people probably do not see like the Ching Court that contains some of the most striking architecture I've seen so far in central London. This open air courtyard is the perfect place to escape the chaos of city life, read a book or just meditate for 15 minutes. If you fancy a visit Ching Court is open to the public between 8 - 6pm from Monday - Friday.

Seven Dials Street Style

Since I had my camera with me I thought I'd see where the mood takes me and indulge in a little street fashion photography as I heard great things about fashion in Seven Dials. There wasn't a huge variety on offer considering the time and date I decided to arrive but most of the people I chatted with were nice and friendly and were comfortable with me snapping a few shots. Like the actual special child that I am I totally forgot to use RAW settings so the images perhaps didn't turn out perfectly but hey, photography is mostly trial and error so I'm glad I took the first albeit baby steps.

Did not ask what they were wearing but I love the fox tail scarf on the left as it goes with the history of Seven Dials when shops used to have all kinds of exotic animals on their displays (read above)
