Style DVSN Collection 12

In the wise words of Will Smith "Summer, summer summertime! Time to sit back and unwind". Summer is here guys and no doubt many of you have amazing plans for the months ahead. Over here at Style Division I decided to do some spring cleaning and put together another one of my inspiration collections.

I collaborated with Ralph Lauren and Infinities for another lookbook which I shot with Lucy from LJLV around Embankment and St Paul's. I don't think the classic RL polo will ever go out of style and it's a perfect companion for the warm months ahead.

I added to the outfit with some sunglasses from Persol and my trusty Jawbone fitness tracker. To see the full lookbook please use the link below:

The launch party was unfortunately overshadowed by London's famous weather but we didn't let that dampen proceedings. Never one to turn down a cocktail it was great to see the city from a new viewpoint while wondering how the hell I got this far.

Topman Knightsbridge, This Is Tailoring

A few days ago I was invited to the Topman store in Knightsbridge to sample their ‘THIS IS TAILORING’ collection and start my personal summer a few weeks earlier than expected. In keeping with tailoring traditions the suits on offer have been reimagined in new ‘warmer handle textures’. Perfect for al those prom, wedding and race days coming up this summer.

Although I've been in London for almost two years now I don't think I've fully explored Knightsbidge before this day. Knightsbridge is home to many luxury shops, including the department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols, and flagship stores of many British and international fashion houses, including those of London-based shoe designers Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik.

Topman - This Is Tailoring

[separator type="thin"]

topman this is tailoringtopman this is tailoring

As of last Thursday TOPMAN occupies the basement of the existing TOPSHOP space at 70 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. The original store space opened in May 2010 trading over 3 floors, with TOPMAN moving into the lower ground floor the total shopping space increases to 14,400sq.ft.

To replicate the success of the Oxford Circus Personal Shopping service a brand new Personal Shopping suite will be installed serving both TOPSHOP and TOPMAN customers, with a personal shopper specifically dedicated to TOPMAN appointments. I found the personal shopper to be super friendly and honest which is what you need if you're not entirely sure about the colour or the fit.

Whichever style you settle on make sure to take it to the onsite tailors who will ensure the perfect fit for your body shape. As a man it's a nice feeling to wear a well tailored suit, it almost puts an extra spring in your step so don't cut corners! I settled on a skinny two button burgundy suit although the light blue and grey styles were ridiculously tempting.

New Faces 02 // Journal 47

In my early photography days I played it safe, taking pictures of buildings and landscapes and simply honing my skills. Over the last few months however I picked up a Canon 7D and a Sigma lens to take some interesting pictures during LCM and LFW for Fucking Young Mag. After that trial by fire I became a lot more relaxed about approaching people I've never met on the street and asking for a photo.

During my time at Unsigned I also got the opportunity to take a few test shots with their models Josh Bartley, Max Rendell, Sven de Vries, Diego Barrueco and Jasmin Clarke. The gorgeous setting of Princelet Street and the Unsigned townhouse itself really enhanced the look and feel of the shots. Make sure to visit the Unsigned models page for more.

Topman // Lookbook 36

Been sitting on this for one for a while but I finally have the chance to share a lookbook I did for Topman for their Great Britain, Great Suits campaign. Shot by the super talented Annabel Lake around Shoreditch, I opted for the skinny black suit to keep things nice and classy. Its elegant design turned what could have been a cumbersome afternoon into a really enjoyable one.

Great Britain, Great Suits

[separator type="thin"]

The Great Britain, Great Suits campaign rounded up the UK's best bloggers including Craig from That Dapper Chap and Jaime from Boy Meets Fashion to pick a suit style that reflects their favourite city. As many of you may have read I travel to Leeds on a semi regular basis so couldn't miss an opportunity to spread the love for one of my favourite UK cities.

An outfit is incomplete until you add a few personal touches to it. My favourite Hard Graft bag was safely by my side as a testament to its quality. With continued use the leather has changed to a more rugged, darker tone although it hasn't lost any of its original atheistic.

Uncle Jack Watch // Lookbook 35

Men tend to misunderstand women when it comes to shoes. "Surely one pair is enough!" they'll exclaim and yet if you give any man a choice of beautiful watches they'll say "Can I keep them ALL?". As women are drawn towards elegant products, men are drawn towards the intricate and mechanical. It's in our nature so why fight it?

This crazy theory of mine was put to the test when Uncle Jack were kind enough to send me a watch from their latest collection. Safe to say I fell in love with it instantly. The simple white face ensures it's compatibility with a huge number of outfits and a light tan leather strap can be quickly changed should it suffer some wear and tear. Make sure to check out the full collection and pick a style that suits you as there's bound to be one that takes your fancy. And don't forget to use the £10 discount code!

Withings Activité Steel // Lookbook 34

If you're a regular reader of Style Division you may have noticed me gushing over the Withings Activité Steel watch in my last lookbook and wearables comparison posts. Now that the watch has been in my possession for a few months I can testify its ease of use and overall versatility. Whether I'm going for a run or dressing up for a night out the smartwatch perfectly complements every outfit. I've recently picked up some green interchangeable straps to vary it up a bit but just a heads up, you're going to be seeing a lot more from Withings in the future 🙂

Those Who Lose Dreaming Are Lost // Lookbook 33

Sometimes it's easy to forget how fortunate we are to live in London and have iconic structures such as Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral literally a tube stop or two away. People take time off work and come here on their holidays so a few weeks ago Lucy from LJLV and I met up to bask in the sunshine and snap a few pics outside the iconic St Paul's.

St Paul's Cathedral

It seems that every time I wear Ralph Lauren, St Paul's is the destination. The ‘new’ St Paul’s Cathedral was designed in English Baroque style in 1708 by a mathematician Sir Christopher Wren as the word for architect was yet to be invented.

Last time I explored the area with Themba Overdaux I mentioned that St Paul's Cathedral was part of a major rebuilding project after the Great Fire of London and over the years it has become an iconic landmark.

Skyscraper designs have actually had to be altered to ensure the view of the famous dome isn't obstructed from locations such as Alexandra Palace or Primrose Hill.

Spring / Summer has got to be my favourite time of the year. The clocks have gone forward to we get an extra hour to top up that Vitamin D. It's also an excuse to wear sunglasses you haven't touched since that holiday many moons ago.

Again, I partnered up with Infinities (who supplied me with the grey Ralph Lauren hoody in my Lincoln post) to showcase another Ralph Lauren item - the forever iconic polo. For me the Ralph Lauren polo is a quintessential staple of any summer wardrobe. Make sure you get the original rather than a copy though as they may look identical but you'll see the difference after just a few washes.

St Paul's Cathedral - Dome

[separator type="thin"]

Wren drew inspiration from Michelangelo's dome of St Peter's Basilica and Mansart's Church of the Val-de-Grâce when designing the famous dome. The dome design was radically modified even as it was being built –something that's unheard of in contemporary architectural practice. The church was against the dome altogether until Christopher Wren spent most of his own savings on constructing a small replica of the final design to win over the hearts of the people in charge.

The North / South Divide // Lookbook 32

Continuing on from my previous travels I once again ended up in my home away from home - Leeds. One of my old housemates and dear friend was leaving UK on his personal adventure so it was only right I surprise him during a pubcrawl known as the Otley Run, dressed head to toe in Russian gear of course. I would like to point out that those were actual drinking rules, I haven't reached that point of 'not caring' yet 🙂

[separator type="thin"]

Don't Mess With Yorkshire

[separator type="thin"]

Even though the morning after was anything but pleasant it was International Happiness Day (Google it, it's an actual thing) and I made a promise to meet up with a girl I met in Leeds nearly a year ago to the day. If you make promises you have to keep them, even to yourself, so feeling utterly drained I whipped myself up a breakfast Gordon Ramsay would have been proud of and set off into town.

My friend Helena was exactly the ball of energy I remembered and just getting a small glimpse into someone else's world is fascinating to me. We create our own reality by choosing who we spend time with, what books we read and music we listen to so remember to make your reality an interesting one to live in.

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life

[separator type="thin"]

My love / hate relationship with London continues although I realise that hate is a strong word for something I admire beyond words. I feel that big cities can overwhelm but only if you let them do so. Modern metropolises such as London, New York or Tokyo borrow from other cultures but also create a unique one of their own which is why they're so fascinating to explore. You never know who you're going to meet and what stories they're going to share with you so it's best to go in with an open mind and appreciation for the random encounters in life. The city is just a backdrop.

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." — Samuel Johnson

Flower In The Crannied Wall // Lookbook 31

I moved to the UK when I was 11 years old and have grown to appreciate it's rich history and complex relationship with religion through the ages. Although I try not to debate the topic it's difficult to deny the impact religion has had on architecture. Cities such as Rome or Medina exemplify the ways in which religious thinking can influence the look and feel of a place and if those initial creative inspirations come from a divine place, who am I to argue.

[separator type="thin"]

[columns_row width="half"]
[column]

In the last few weeks I travelled around the country getting in touch with my roots and managed to visit the 4 cities that hold a dear place in my heart: Boston, Lincoln, Leeds and London. During my visit to Lincoln I had to take a little stroll around the famous Lincoln Cathedral. It was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549) and it's Gothic design looms over the city to this day.

Recently I never seem to settle on a style for my lookbooks, darting from casual street wear to smart and clean suits but at the end of the day you should wear what feels natural to you. The Zip Hooded Ralph Lauren Sweatshirt which I grabbed from Infinities was a perfect fit for the stroll while my ever present Withings smartwatch kept reminding me to take it easy on the infamous Steep Hill.

Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies,
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower—but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all,
I should know what God and man is.

[separator type="thin"]

Behind the Cathedral there is a monument to Alfred Tennyson, a Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland with the following poem titled 'Flower in the crannied wall' written on it. The poem challenged my way of thinking about beauty and how beauty is attributed rather than gained. It also encouraged me to look past the superficial and see real beauty within everything 🙂 What does the poem say to you?
